JEKYLL AND HYDE - THE WAR YEARS - VOL 1

I have just completed this book and will soon start on his diary covering 1942 - 1943.
The book took a little getting use to with its style and content. The book itself was not written for publication. He wrote on 30 March 1941 "I have my diaries, twenty fat volumnes, deposited in the underground vault of the Reichsbank. They are too valuable to be allowed to fall victim to some air raid. They provide a picture of my entire life and our times. If fate allows me a few years for the task, I intend to edit them for the sake of future generations. They may well be of some interest to the world at large."
There were, regrettably, some interesting events that were not in this book for whatever reasons. The book opens in early 1939 with a few entries and then jumps all the way to October 1939. During this time the Nazis negotiated a non-aggression treaty with the Soviet Union and the war started with the German successful invasion of Poland. Other notable missing events include the Scandinavia campaign of April 1940 and the defeat of France.
However other events are not missing. The propaganda minister's view of the "phony war" of 1939 - 1940 is recorded here along with the Nazis' impression of the Soviet war with Finland. Goebbels writes about their Italians allies in an insulting manner -- deservedly so -- because of their bumbling military adventures in the Balkans. The book covers the Nazis' invasion of the Balkans and Greece -- mainly to rescue the Italians and the early days of the north African campaign. He almost daily records the war with England and is convinced that with all the ships being sunk and the Luftwaffe constantly pounding England it is only a matter of time before the Germans will win. Another interesting event was when Rudolf Hess, a man he had great respect and admiration for, flew to England and almost instantly became persona non grata. Even more importantly, the book covers the preparation for Adolf Hitler's greatest gamble -- the war with the Soviet Union. The book covers the first few weeks of that adventure before ending in early July 1941.
The book gives an almost daily insight to the German government in the first two years of the war. Goebbels had to walk a tightrope in managing public morale. The Germans wanted peace but also victory. Goebbels had to keep morale high even when times were hard but also had to keep expectations of victory contained when victory seemed so close after the fall of France. The book also shows petty squabbles within the German government -- especially with the Foreign Ministry in general and Foreign Minister Ribbentrop specifically.
I call this Jekyll and Hyde because Goebbels also presents a very human and loving side in this diary. Despite some marital difficulties with his wife, Magda, he shows great affection and respect for her and all but worshipped his children. It is hard to see a man who loves his family so much being such a hateful man when it came to Jews. Most anti-Semites may hate Jews but not to the same level that Goebbels and the rest of Hitler's henchmen would.
The biggest problem I had with the book was the book itself. The seller described the book as being in acceptable condition. If so the seller had a low standard of acceptability. When I unpacked the book parts of the book was already loose and threatening to fall apart. The act of reading the book such as turning pages was almost too much for the book to handle.

Fascinating Insight into the 3rd Reich

Goebbels writes well, and the translation is excellent. He gives the reader an excellent understanding of the machinations in the Nazi party. You'll meet all your favorite Nazis -- Goering, Himmler, Heydrich, and Hitler.
You'll also read how Goebbels perceived Roosevelt, Knox, and Churchill.
There wasn't much job security amongst the various big shots. Today you're a hero, tomorrow you will be shot.

It is the classic combination of men and machine. Those aircraft and Airmen were assigned to the US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), “America’s specialized airpower . . . a step ahead in a changing world, delivering special operations power anytime, anywhere.”1 AFSOC controls a mixed fleet of both rotaryand fixed-wing aircraft to facilitate the fulfillment of that mission. However, the single aircraft that, in its day, has best epitomized that role is the Pave Low helicopter. It, perhaps more than any other aircraft, allowed the AFSOC to realize its purpose. But it was not always so. The aircraft themselves were revolutionary combinations of new, more powerful turbine engines with rotarywing aircraft to produce vastly increased lifting power. Conceptualized, built, and designated for simpler missions, they were immediately swept up into the long war in Southeast Asia. There they proved the efficacy of the aircraft for dangerous rescue missions, for the initiation of a whole new generation of developing avionics and navigation technology, for providing challenging direct support to small special forces teams and indigenous forces inserted behind enemy lines, and for a myriad of other things that heavy-lift helicopters could be assigned to do. In accomplishing all of that, they also trained a whole generation of men who learned of combat along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and at other places like Quang Tri, South Vietnam; Son Tay, North Vietnam; and Koh Tang Island, Cambodia. After that conflict, those aircraft and men were returned to peacetime locations and duties, and much was forgotten of those dangerous times and missions. However, a cadre of dedicated combat aviators and commanders felt that the aircraft and community of Airmen had much more to give. Foreseeing an ever-dangerous world, they harnessed those aircraft to a series of evolving new technologies that vastly improved the aircraft by giving them the ability to traverse airspace in any weather conditions, day and night, and to avoid enemy threats. That concept was validated in operations in Panama, Kuwait, Iraq, Serbia, Afghanistan, and many more smaller and quieter operations in between. The men and aircraft also showed the larger utilitarian value of the aircraft as, over the years, they were called out many times to provide natural disaster and humanitarian relief from Africa to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Something missing

I bought this book because I worked on these helicopters in the Air Force during the 1980's. I guess I wanted to revisit history a little. Unfortunately, this book was something of a disappointment. The text of the book seems accurate and quite long and detailed, however, there are a few things missing. I suspect the publisher shipped these books before they proofed them. There is no copy write page. The table of contents lists dozens of figures and photos. There are only 5 photos in the entire book, but there are dozens of empty spaces where the figures and photos would presumably go. There are also no page numbers in the entire book, but the page numbers are used in the table of contents. There is also nothing printed on the spine or on the back cover. I will try to return this copy and perhaps get one that is actually complete as I would very much like to view the book in its entirety. Maybe then I can give it a better review.
Update: I returned the book and within 3 days received a replacement. Unfortunately, the replacement is identical to the first one. No page numbers, most photos missing & no copy write page. Apparently, Amazon doesn't read the reason you returned an item before they ship you a new one. I will return this one for a refund. Don't buy this book.

Stephan Bugaj started screenwriting professionally at Pixar Animation Studios, having transitioned from a decade of working as a technical artist to co-creating two development projects. He subsequently left the studio to head-up all writing and directing for Telltale Games, and co-write the first episode of Tales From the Borderlands and co-direct the first episode of Game of Thrones. He then left that studio to head to Los Angeles where he works as VP of Creative for Hanson Robotics and as a film, games and virtual reality writer-director working with WakingUp Media, Visioneer Studios, Marza Animation Planet, Digital Quilt, Limitless VR, Penny Pop, Pocket Gems, and others. Justin Sloan is a video game writer at Telltale Games, where he has worked on such titles as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. His novels include such titles as Falls of Redemption and Back by Sunrise, and he dabbles in screenwriting. Justin studied writing at the Johns Hopkins MA in Writing program and screenwriting at UCLA. Before becoming an author, Justin served in the Marines and has lived in Japan, Korea, and Italy. Great book! This reminds me of one my all-time fav screenwriting books "The 101 Habits of Highly Successful Screenwriters." Except, this time, the author can cite his own experiences writing in the video game world, getting published, & getting optioned. There is nothing better than reading interviews and hearing advice from successful writers to get one inspired, organized, and on the right track! Especially in this modern environment, "writers" need to know how to cross-publish, create content, get it out there, and write across platforms. Highly recommended.

A perfect follow-up, and great advice for both new and seasoned writers

Creative Writing Career 2 is a tremendous follow-up to the first book, and it does a remarkable job of dispelling the myths surrounding what it means to be a writer. You'll get hard-line, practical advice from real industry experts, demonstrating exactly how lucrative—financially and spiritually—a creative writing career can be. Learn from real pros, who are doing this work daily and succeeding at it. And rather than canned and panned advice from would-bes, you can learn from people who have actually done this work, and who love it and know what it can be.

I highly recommend this volume, and it's predecessor, to anyone even considering a writing career. It's the advice I wish I'd gotten early on, and it's filled with gems that can help new and seasons writers alike.

About the Author
Fredrick Long is Professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary and has authored numerous essays and books including Kairos Greek: A Beginning Greek Grammar and forthcoming commentaries on Ephesians and 2 Corinthians. His research interests include ancient rhetoric, classical Greek, discourse analysis, imperial criticism and Pauline studies. T. Michael W. Halcomb is a PhD candidate (New Testament) at Asbury Theological Seminary. He is published in a number of academic journals and presents often at academic conferences. His interests include social-scientific criticism, performance criticism, cultural-anthropological criticism, the intersection of popular culture and religion, and Markan and Pauline studies.

Frederick J. Long, Professor of New Testament at Asbury Seminary, and PhD candidate (Asbury Seminary, N.T.), T. Michael W. Halcomb, have combined to edit an invaluable resource for scholars, seminarians, or anyone who wishes to enhance their language acquisition with the first volume in their Hexapla series: A Parallel and Interlinear New Testament Polyglot: Luke-Acts.

The format of the Gospel of Luke follows an interlinear format while the Book of Acts is in parallel format. The type-set here is remarkably clean and easy to follow. It is clear that great care was at a premium in making this source aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Moreover, Long and Halcomb have succeeded in bringing together difficult-to-find French, German, Latin, and Hebrew texts of the NT along with updating the ASV with regard to English idioms.

A word of suggestion to the reader: Please read the introduction (iii-iv)! One can make sense of the work without it, but contextual information on the versions used, textual variances, and the goals of the work as outlined by the editors is invaluable for understanding the resource placed in the reader's hands.

Excellent for language study

This is almost perfect for my desire to study various languages. I had worked on a similar project on my own for a while, but this is easier to access. It does use older textual versions, but thay are strong traditions and the basis of much of Christian tradition in those languages.
