Two-thirds of "Journeys Beyond the Standard Model" is devoted to the Standard Model of fundamental particle interactions. Book delivers on its promise

The book gives solid, practical advice for people who wish to conduct microbiology experiments. There are many suggestions for what to study. We made up our own experiment, but we used the techniques for working with agar which I didn't know before reading the book and were better than I could find on the Web.

Why only four stars? The book didn't draw me in beyond what I needed to know.

Using important, previously unpublished material and original interviews with a range of individuals, both British and Yemeni, who lived through this defining period of colonial history, Without Glory in Arabia tells the story of the final few years of British rule in Aden and the neighboring Eastern and Western Aden Protectorates. While some view British rule, on the whole, as beneficial to the local population, others insist that very little was achieved. Worse, Britain did not provide a structure of government constitution which met the conflicting needs of Aden and the Protectorate. About the Author

John Ducker was in the British Overseas Civil Service in Aden and the Protectorate from 1960 to 1967, then moved to the World Bank.

Peter Hinchcliffe is an Honorary Fellow of Edinburgh University where he teaches Middle East History and Politics. He was with the British Overseas Civil Service in Aden and the Federation of South Arabia which provides the background to and inspiration for Without Glory in Arabia. His other publications include Jordan: A Hashemite Legacy, Conflicts in the Middle East since 1945.

Maria Holt is a Research Fellow in the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster.

An Apprpriate Desceiption of Labour Government in the Mid-Sixties

The closing years of British presence in South Arabia were remarkable for the lack of vision an aptitude on the part of Laour government that came into power in 1964. The authors capture a glimpse of the scale of damage the myobic decision of Wislon's government has caused not only to South Arabia but also to the British reputation as steadfast friends.

The authors, from their prespective, have done a good job of describing the shameful abandonment of friends in Arbia but fail to describe fully the inculcable damage such shameful policies have brought to the people of the Federation of South Arabia and Aden.

On the whole, however, the book is a good read and I find the title is atelescopic summary of the end of the British Empire.

This lavishly produced book attempts to explicate the mysterious allure of 17th-century Dutch genre pictures, which were painted most famously by Johannes Vermeer. Syracuse professor Frantis frames these works in a historical context to demonstrate how audiences of the period would have interpreted them. The author explains how many of the objects portrayed in these works had coded meanings that are lost on modern audiences. For example, birds, oyster shells and cats were widely recognized as symbols of sex, while subject poses that look awkward to contemporary eyes were actually considered the height of dignified comportment by Dutch art patrons. Frantis also traces the history of Holland and the development of its art, arguing that the two are closely linked. His argument is that, as the country became wealthier, the subject matter of its paintings became increasingly refined, changing from satirical portraits of raucous, lazy peasants to elegant images of upper classes at play. In Frantis’s opinion, both portrayals are constructed types, and neither reflects the reality of Dutch life in the 17th century. To back up his thesis, Frantis has done impressive research into the culture of the period, examining its literature, songs, guides of behavior and poems. At the same time, he doesn’t neglect the paintings’ formal elements, deftly analyzing the artists’ influences, color schemes and use of tools like camera obscura. As convincing as Frantis’s interpretation is, it breaks down when applied to the work of two masters, Jan Steen and Vermeer. To Frantis’s credit, he acknowledges this discrepancy, giving the inexplicability of artistic genius its due. 230 b/w & 100 color illus.

Franits gives a very thorough and leveled image of Dutch 17th century genre painting. He is careful to represent the various opinions that exist on genre painting and doesn't push his opinions too strongly. The book includes a complete bibliography, in-depth footnotes and a great deal of glossy colour images. This is the best book on genre painting since that of Peter Sutton.

This is a suberb study, and one that is beautifully illustrated. I have yet to explore various parts of its readable text. And I haven't yet been able to plough through its critical apparatus. But I'm sure that I will be enlarging my understanding of the paintings it highlights for a long time to come.

About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. This book is a tool shed

As one of the previous reviewers noted this book offers no (very few to be accurate) proofs. While I would normally pounce on an author for neglecting proofs and rigor, Winston approach is rather refreshing and practical. It is like a tool shed filled with tools that one may use without completely understanding its composition. This book is very accessible to people who are not very mathematically apt and provides a gentle introduction for those advanced in mathematics. If you want a general introduction to LP and NLP before you dive into the meat and potatoes (rigor and proofs) or if you want to just pick up some methods to optimize operations related tasks, I highly recommends this book.

Very helpful book

This isn't your regular review here, because I'm guessing we all "have" to buy this book when we take the course.

This book is very helpful for students of all levels. I took it for an "operations research" class after more than 7 years of not studying any math. Still, the first few chapters offer a recap of algebra needed for the course. In the subsequent chapters, everything progresses slowly with lots of examples, (which is helpful if you miss a class or two).

Good luck with the class using this book then.

Great introduction to math programming/optimization

I'm a PhD student in operations research, and this is a great operations research book. Its sometimes confusing that it has so many names: Mathematical programming, linear programming (and non-linear), industrial engineering, operations research, optimization etc.

So this is an optimization book, not a computer programming book. Mathematical programming refers to both linear and non-linear optimization. I would recommend this as an introductory book in both the theory and the modeling aspect of operations research/ linear and non-linear optimization.

For more advanced theory I would recommend the following (advanced undergrads and graduate students):
Linear Programming (LP): Introduction to Linear Programming by Bertsimas and Tsitsiklis.
Non-Linear Programming (NLP): Convex Optimization by Boyd and Vandenberghe
Both LP and NLP: Linear and Nonlinear Programming by David G. Luenberger and Yinyu Ye

Not a good book for the visual learner

Spear offers many helpful tips, among them: 1) wetting the hair for 90 seconds before shampooing and 2) before cutting your bangs, in order to avoid cutting them too short, first wet them and allow the hair to dry for 3 minutes to determine shrinkage.
That said, the main purpose of this book is to teach ordinary people to cut hair, and I'm not sure it does this very well. I've been cutting my 3 boys' hair for many years, having learned by using common sense and by watching my stylist's technique as she cut my hair. I was hoping this book would help me finally understand how to give a good haircut. Not so.
If you are a visual learner, you will find it difficult to follow the step-by-step instructions, since there are few accompanying photos. At a minimum, the instructions for each type of haircut should be accompanied by a photo of that style, as well as head sketches or photos showing the progression of the haircut.

Good for the home stylist

This is not a professional stylist's manual, it's for HOME use. I think that she does spend a wee bit too much time trying to convince the reader to go off to cosmetology school, but then again, that is her field, and her interest. If you want a professional manual giving tips on how to do the hottest, newest styles, go to cosmetology school. If you want the basics of hair cutting, to trim your family's, or your own hair, this book is an ideal tool. As a mother who has been cutting the hair of a husband and 4 sons, I have found corrections to problems that I have been having as an amateur stylist. The first time that I skimmed this book I saw a few tips well worth the price of the book to polish the cuts that I have been giving, and to prevent errors in the future. At about the cost of one decent haircut, this book is a frugal investment.

Not an easy book to follow

I feel bad giving this author 1 star because I can only imagine how difficult it is to write a book. And I'm sure she's a good stylist. But I'm a guy who wants to cut his own hair and I couldn't find any easy-to-follow instructions in this book. I truly am a haircutting 'dummy' so I need a book that will treat me like a dummy- and this isn't it. There were terms I didn't understand 100% but no glossary to explain them and the index was little help. Since the book is over 300 pages, I wasn't about to flip through the pages to find answers.
I would suggest that the next edition have far less talk and have far more photos with step-by-step instructions. As the old saying goes, a photo is worth a thousand words, but a drawing of hair is only worth about ten or twenty. Something like that...

About the Author
Nick Baker has been involved in the great sport of competitive swimming since 1961. He swam competitively for eleven years, coached club for twenty-one years, and has coached swim camps exclusively for the past eighteen years. He started his coaching career in Canada in 1972, then moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1993 to operate a swim camp there. In 1995 Nick published 101 Winning Ways, a motivational book for competitive swimmers. The material for the book came from observing the winning ways of successful swimmers he coached. Nick cofounded the original Peak Performance Swim Camp in 1996. In 2005 he branched out on his own and founded the present-day version. Since then Nick has traveled throughout the United States and abroad, conducting his holistic camps and clinics. Past international locations include: Antigua, Aruba, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, China, Curacao, England, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, and Venezuela. Past US locations include: Alabama, Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Peak Performance Swim Camp currently offers more than two dozen swim camps and clinics annually including clinics for triathletes and master swimmers. He also acts as a consultant to various swim teams including the Greenwich YMCA in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Missing some important elements

As mentioned by others, there is no table of contents. Didn't really seem like a big deal, but, in the Kindle version, having a table of contents would be very helpful - especially since the author continually references other parts of the book. It takes a long time to find something when you literally have to go page by page.

And, for a book that puts a big emphasis on technical proficiency, having images would be a big help. You can explain things all you want, but when some of those explanations contradict, having pictures would help to clarify what is meant. For example, when looking at the 5 lines of the body, it is noted that hand entry is at the shoulder line. Then later, the author says that the hand enters the water in front of the shoulder. Images might help clarify where the author thinks the hands should actually enter the water. If you are a less experienced coach, you may not have a good idea of many of the things the author describes.

Most, if not all, of the content in the book is available at the book's website. I feel like a chump for paying for the information, when I could have just read it online. The website could add value by having videos of many of the topics covered. Instead, the author tells the reader to find their own videos that show proper technique. Call me crazy, but if the reader doesn't know the proper technique, it is possible for them to select videos of improper technique.

For someone new to coaching swimming, this book could be confusing and incomplete. For someone with experience coaching swimming, they probably know most of the concepts, whether they agree with all of his teachings or not.

Good book, bought it before attending one of Coach Nick's camps. I enjoyed reading the book and it helped my son's swimming.

Great book! The Swimming Triangle transends swimming to any competitive situation.

Coach Baker has written a true gem. His holistic approach to Competitive Swimming could be applied to any sport. The importance of mental training is overlooked at all levels of sport, and his Mental Conditioning chapter has addressed many stumbling blocks that can be overcome with straight forward thought and introspection. The information presented in the technical section is cutting edge. He has many effective ways that are easy to coach, and easy to remember and implement by swimmers of all ability levels. I truly believe that any novice coach could successfully coach a team by just following this book. Parents of swimmers should also be interested in this book because it could fill in any gaps that are not currently being addressed by their coaches. In competitive swimming being the fastest is king, but the life skills outlined in the book go far beyond the pool, to being great at whatever you choose to do in life.
