I am delighted to see Why Men Rebel back in print. In addition to being an important theory about protest and rebellion it also serves well teachers who wish to illustrate theoretical levels of analysis and how theory can focus on one while engaging the context provided by others. Gurr's theory is sometimes over-simplified as a purely psychological theory. Yet it has a core focus on individual grievances within the context of societal norms and values as well as government capacity and repression. Few rational choice theories ground their analysis within social contexts, and few of the sociological or structural theories provide an account of the impact of individuals' beliefs or motives. Why Men Rebel provides not only an important theory of protest and rebellion, but remains today a model for developing a rigorous theory that engages the complexity and nuance that this topic surely requires. --Will H. In this influential writing, "Why Men Rebel" by Ted Robert Gurr covers the root causes of political violence, whether it is riots, rebellions, coups, or insurgencies, Gurr develops what is known as the relative deprivation theory. In this theory, essentially an economic argument, political violence is attributed to a discrepancy between what men and women think they deserve and what they can actually get in society. The resulting frustration culminates in incidences of collective political violence by social groups.

The�Star-Eater�world....In ancient days before humans spread their populace to the stars, a company that got too big for its britches would find the Government gently reining it in or roughly shackling it down. And when a company got too big for Government oversight, usually its own weight would cause an implosion; the force of natural expansion and demise.�When a company gets bigger than its Government, then you have a problem on your hands. The MacCollie Company got bigger than that: they ruled travel to the stars. The development of the L-Space drive--the first practical FTL drive--created a monopoly that allowed access to the stars only to those the MacCollie company felt they could trust.At first, they trusted only the Government--the Fellowship of Humanity. Slowly, carefully, cautiously, they expanded access to a few independent businesses, and the race to colonize other worlds took shape.That put Earth's problems in a new light. When you're orbiting Aldebaran three checking for possibilities of Terra-forming, a flood in Bangladesh seems a long, long way away.Of course, even with the L-Space drive, interstellar space travel was in its infancy. It took twelve years to reach Earth's nearest neighbor, Alpha Centauri. With the advances in drive technology, it took only took four years to reach Lushman 16. It took a mere six months to orbit the planets of Epsilon Eridani.�Yeah, we humans are good that way; give us a problem, and we'll work it out.�But let's get distances into perspective... Our galaxy is 200,000 light years in diameter. Flying at Light Speed (LS), to get to the nearest edge would still take us 87,000 years.�Then Hector Faber (a MacCollie scientist, of course) discovered and developed the H-20 Drive; capable of faster than light speed by quite a bit. As usual, Earth politicians took two years to decide what to call it; the 'H-2O Drive', the Faber Drive, but the pilots were way ahead of them. The invention was Faber's, the process was simply called FTL-VII (Faster Than Light, Version II). Yeah, it didn't make a dent in those Galactic-Edge distances, but it sure sped up travel in the Fellowship Worlds. Thanks to MacCollie, planets were colonized tout suite!�When MacCollie Scout Benjamin Steele discovered "jump holes", it was the time to head into the unknown en mass. Basically rips in time and space which, like a star, seemed to exhibit long stable periods, they transported FTL material across huge distances in an instant.�MacCollie jumped at the opportunity like only they could. In a year they manufactured 1000 Survey-Scouts, recruited 1000 pilots, and fired them to every corner of the Milky Way.�Enter our hero... Seth Gingko.

This series is imaginative and exciting. Mix a bit of Andromeda Ascendant with a lot more snark, a Malcolm Reynolds- type captain, aliens, hardcore sci-fi, and bad luck and you have an idea about the series.

DB for Business will be worth it!

First of all, I would like to say that I made the wrong purchase. Haha. I was meaning to really find out about DB for Business, but silly me, I thought that is also for free version. Apparently, you have to pay for the feature. That's my mistake, but it's okay becauss with this book, I learned a lot.

The author outlined everything, from creating a shared folder to synching. It's like a manual, only better, because the explanations are so detailed.

I already love dropbox; as a teacher, my students and I can collaborate using this. For business, I can definitely tell you that DB Business is worth your bucks. I am really, really considering it.

Ever since I traded in my corner office for a desk in my spare bedroom I have found that collaboration is extremely difficult and costs a lot of money. My team and I tried various methods which we found to be unreliable and un-secure. Before reading this book I did not know of Dropbox, and now I can say I understand it. The writer does well at introducing it and mentioning its great features. I think this is the way to collaborate, online; all through a secure and reliable platform. I am who one would describe as “technologically challenged” and the writer has helped me understand how to use dropbox by not being too technical.

Enter the world of Office 2016

I thought that moving to Windows 10 would be a leap, but with the aid of an excellent Dummies book I was in good shape. On the other hand, Going to Office 2016 from my "pre-ribbon" Office was like climbing Everest. I guess I had fought the no-ribbon battle for so long I had refused to look at the advantages off the "new" (for me) format. It took this book, and the world having moved on, to help me tonot only accept the ribbon, but see it' advantages. I recommend this book to fellow hold-out (if any survive) as a fine way to gradually undertand the tructure and application of Office 2016.

About the Author
Dalton Conley is a professor of sociology at Princeton University. In 2005, Conley became the first sociologist to win the prestigious National Science Foundation's Alan T. Waterman Award, which honors an outstanding young U.S. scientist or engineer. He writes for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Slate, and Forbes. He is the author of Honky (2001) and The Pecking Order: A Bold New Look at How Family and Society Determine Who We Become (2004). His other books include Being Black, Living in the Red: Race, Wealth, and Social Policy in America (1999), The Starting Gate: Birth Weight and Life Chances (2003), and Elsewhere, U.S.A. (2009). Amazon's listing for the full version paperback links to the core version ebook, so I mistakenly got this when I needed the full version. This one only has 10 chapters, so watch out!

Good book, but it is not the full version.

I rented this book for my Soc 100 class, and it was great until the final test. This particular book is only chapters 1-12. It opts out the remaining chapters. Otherwise the material is a 5/5, just beware this is not the full book.

The Ebook Lies

So I rented this textbook due to a lack of funds. It works great on the app, responds well to the features. Except it is eight chapters short. The ebook falsely let's you believe that the complete fourth edition of the textbook is being given to the consumer. In fact, it is structured very much like the third edition. Amazon needs to correct this issue immediately because the majority who purchase and/or rent this textbook electronically now have to find some other forms to receive the chapters they are missing. Please DO NOT purchase this electronic download unless you know, exactly, how many chapters the edition contains.
