Ruby dreams of escaping the Congregation.... Escape from slaver Darwin West and his cruel Overseers. Escape from struggling to gather the life-prolonging Water that keeps the Congregants alive - and Darwin rich. Escape from her certain, dreary existence, living as if it's still the early 1800s, when the Congregation was first enslaved. But if Ruby leaves, the Congregation will die without the secret ingredient to the Water: her blood. So she stays, and prays to their savior Otto, who first gave Water to the Congregants... and fathered Ruby before he vanished.

When the Congregants discover Ruby's forbidden romance with an Overseer, they beat Ford to stop her from running away with him. Ruby steals their store of Water to save Ford's life and is banished. Ruby has everything she's dreamed of: a modern life with Ford. But the modern world isn't what she thought it would be, and Ruby can't forsake the Congregation. Love and loyalty push Ruby to return and fight for her family's freedom... at a terrible price.

Not your typical YA story
By Ellz Readz
My thoughts...Drought, the second book by author Pam Bachorz is not a happy go lucky story. It is dark and twisted. It left me cringing and covering my eyes with despair, yet I could not stop reading.

The story takes place in modern times, though it is hard to tell. The main characters, or Congregation, live under the control of a tyrant named Darwin West. This is probably one of the scariest villains I have read in YA literature. The man is evil. Ruby, the heroine, and other members of the congregation have to harvest water for West. The water, which is believed to have healing properties, can only be extracted by scraping water off leaves in the woods. If the Congregants don't perform as expected, they are punished by starvation, physical exertion, and violence.

While Darwin West is a horrifying villain. Ruby is an incredibly strong heroine. She and her people believe they will be saved by a man named Otto, who fled from them around 200 years ago. Ruby longs to be free of the life that has enslaved her for hundreds of years, but not everyone wants change.

As I mentioned above, this book was hard to put down. It was horrifying, agonizing, and painful at times to read. Ruby's mother infuriated me, as did the Elders in the story. The character of Otto baffled me, but the devotion to him was mysterious. I am left pondering why these people have stayed for so long. Was it out of fear? Desperation? Or Faith.

Overall, Drought was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it. This would be a great book for a club or discussion group: it will definitely evoke some strong opinions and discussions.

Drought leaves you with more questions than answers
By Megan @ Book Brats
The Village meets slavery meets a cult? Trust me, it sounds a LOT more interesting than it ends up being.

As you might have guessed, I was rather interested in this book based on the plot alone. Yes, it has bad reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, but it does not live up to the promise the plot gives. In fact, it falls flat thanks to 1.) stupid characters, 2.) implausible plot developments, and 3.) an ending that wrapped up 400 pages worth of action in 10 minutes.

Ruby has lived her entire life living practically as a slave, gathering Water (dew collected daily from plants mixed with her blood which gives extended life and healing powers). She's 200 years old but looks and acts like she's 16. One of the Overseers, Ford, is the designated love interest of this tale. He's handsome, 18, and working as a slave driver to provide for his mother's cancer treatment. Ruby's mother claims to be looking out for the interests of the community while serving as a reverend for a Congregation that worships Otto, the original man whose blood gave life before he up and left the community to hide in the woods to continue on, but only after impregnating Ruby's mother. The main villain is a man named Darwin West, who is in love with Ruby's mother and, scorned, follows the Congregation into the woods and enslaves them in order to procure and sell the Water to the Visitor. The Congregation has lived there for 200 years and still lives as if it is 1810, waiting for Otto while Darwin manages to live on as a member of the outside community, recruiting Overseers to serve as guards from convicts and the desperate unemployed.

Some tropes employed in this book include Instalove (Ford falls in love with Ruby at first sight, and she pretty much does as well). More importantly than that, everyone in the Congregation is apparently dumb. They make Ruby their leader and then when they realize she is in love with an Overseer they cast her out - by the end, Ruby's mother has become a secondary villain, even trying to kill Ford and tells Ruby she is an embarrassment and not worth love because she "betrayed the community" by trying to save them and not wait for Otto (who is now a Jesus-like figure).

The ending seems like the author realized she needed to wrap it up and after 300 pages of harvesting Water, talking about Ruby's power, love, and how Darwin is evil, the Visitor shows up. I still don't get the Visitor - he just showed up and then left but managed to do so much in the process that concluded the novel. On top of this, Ford is also guilty of religious insensitivity, saying he can't love Ruby because worshiping Otto is heresy and a sin. Ruby, meanwhile, is guilty of "I love him, but I can't love him" in every chapter. We get it, we don't need to be reminded every five pages.

In the end, this book had promise, but just fell flat. Ruby was dumb, her mother was just as bad as the actual villain (all she had to do was marry Darwin - it was obviously she cared about him, but she was saving herself for Jesus - I mean Otto), and Ruby and Ford fell in love despite them having nothing in common besides googly eyes. Oh, and there were several obvious editing problems (they're versus their came up at least twice, and punctuation usage was off). A good premise does not make a good book.

2/5 stars
VERDICT: Go watch The Village instead and eat some ice cream. You'll leave feeling less dumbfounded.

Unquestionably thirsty for answers!
By theEPICrat
Pam Bachorz weaves a rich and dark tale about a teenaged girl who is stuck between a rock and a hard place. At times, I had more questions than answers while reading - and even at the end, I think drought leaves the readers wanting to find out what happens next and what had happened before to lead up to Ruby's world as she knew it. The great thing about drought is, once I let go of what I know, I really got into the flow of Ruby's wretched world. Hers was a simple though horrible life: Collect enough Water to get fed and avoid the whip. A village enslaved. Not necessarily true, but I imagined that they dressed like Pilgrims - don't ask me why - I just did! It was only when Ruby interacts with Ford when I realized how behind-the-times Ruby was, how deeply Ms. Bachorz wove us into the village and hid us from the big, ugly truth. A truth the Overseers obviously knew, and the question that burns through my mind is WHY. I felt we never got a complete picture of all the characters except Ruby. Granted, we see events unfold through Ruby's eyes - but usually I thought there'd still be a little more insight to the other characters present. Maybe Ruby wasn't too observant - maybe I haven't given drought enough thought yet - but there is not a whole lot about the other characters from my initial impression. Ruby's mom tries to impress upon Ruby and the Congregation that waiting for salvation is their best option and escape in any way is not safe, but how did she reach such a conclusion and what happens when salvation never comes - or escape is possible? What makes Darwin tick - and how does he sleep each night after his monstrous actions? How does Ford get recruited to the Overseers - and is he leading Ruby into a trap by enticing her to escape? The ending of drought definitely left me both triumphant yet horrified at how things panned out for Ruby, Ford, the Overseers, and the Congregation. Definitely did not see any of it coming! I doubt that there would be a sequel, although one would be most welcome for all the questions that I have! drought will satisfy any thirst for a new dystopian YA read. Mysterious, shocking, bittersweet - an excellent combination to keep readers thirsting to learn more about the world that Ms. Bachorz has created.

Decent chronology of Johns life; focus on his dark last days
By A Customer
Woodward's book is, of course, flawed like Judy Belushi's "Samurai Widow"; but other than these two books there is nothing more of Belushi to refer back to, in the written form. There will always be the SNL videos, the Blues Brothers CDs, or the handful of movies John did, but where does one interested enough start from when they want to make some chronological order of Belushi's life; to learn more about his exhuberent ascent, his tumultuous descent and his final dark months, weeks and days? Bob Woodward gives the reader a dry and thorough, if not somewhat-slanted, take on John Belushi's 33 years on planet Earth. The reader simply cannot help but get the feeling that the author is emphasizing the downward spiral and the end of a manically funny man, which is why this book wasn't received very well when it was first released, back in 1984.. Still, from JB's days in Wheaton, Illinois, Second City Chicago and National Lampoon, to Saturday Night Live, Hollywood and the Chateau Maramont Bungalow #3, Woodward's book is worth 3 1/2 starts and, at the very least, one good read-through.

Puts things in perspective
By Mark Coffey
I read this book about once a year to remind myself of how much I want to live. For anyone caught up in the illusion of the glory of life in the fast lane, the second half of this book, dealing with Belushi's last great binge in minute-by-minute detail, should be a real eye-opener. Woodward paints a balanced portrait of a much-loved, charasmatic individual trapped by his own demons. Alternately fascinating and horrifying, this is perhaps the best celebrity biography I have read. I sincerely hope it comes back into print - if not, I suggest you try to hunt a copy down; it is worth your time.

Very interesting and sad book, but not very well written.
By Clockwork Apple
The story of John Belushi's life was a rollercoaster ride of very low times of self destruction, separated by short rises of happiness and accomplishment. John seemed to be someone that just could not be happy in his own skin, he did not see himself as a worthy human being who deserved to be happy, but instead someone who did not deserve his fame, or did not feel he was respected in the ways he thought he should be, he was constantly trying to prove himself. John was selfish, yes, he would binge for weeks on drugs, parties, and the fast life looking to fill that void regardless of who it hurt. He destroyed friendships as fast as he made them, but was always the one quick to apologize and try to mend the bridge he had just burned. I feel sorry for John and wish that he would of been given the help he was crying out to receive. Like so many before and after him his problems were ignored in hopes that he would somehow see the light and snap out of it on his own. John is to blame for his own death, and partial blame goes to his friends, but a huge part of the blame rests on Hollywood's shoulders. A town that rewards it successful entertainers with money and fame, and then quickly shuns them the minute that entertainers value has been sucked dry. Hollywood glorifies a lifestyle, in it's movies, that in reality is an impossible one to maintain. The book is very poorly written in my opinion, and Woodward easily confuses the reader by jumping from quote to quote. The readers many times is left unsure of who the quote is being taken from or who exactly the quote is about. There are a lot of scattered bits of information in the book as well and also many typos. For example in one section John's heart is described as being 222 lbs after his death. The book was interesting but so scattered I found my self struggling to stay focused and had to re-read many paragraphs to fully understand what exactly Woodward was trying to say.

Northern Shores: A History of the Baltic Sea and its Peoples, by Alan Palmer

We pass through the legendary castles of Elsinore and Halsingborg to enter the Baltic world. From early Viking days and then under the Byzantine empire, the Baltic was always much more than Europe's backwater, and in medieval times the area was an important trading ground. Each individual country developed separately, but then in the late 17th and early 18th centuries came the sole attempt to create a unified Baltic Empire based in Sweden. However, with the rise of Russian influence, this came apart and Russia expanded her empire in the region, annexing Finland, to be followed by the Prussianising of the Polish provinces. Great national sentiment grew in all Baltic states, and a high cultural level was achieved - both musically and in literature. The 20th century has been a defining one for the Baltic region: the Eastern Front in the First World War; consequences of the Russian Revolution; the rise of aggression with the Nazi-Soviet Pact and then the Second World War. The economic and political issues coming out of the end of the war were compunded by the Cold War and Communist expansion in the Baltic states. And in the last decade the European ideal has spread and been adapted within the Baltic, as these lands open up to the outside world.

Review
'This is no social history but a huge narrative sweep across centuries of war, from the Vikings' long boats to Gustavus Adolphus and well beyond. A huge, highly ambitious book' -- Good Book Guide 20050701 'This assured work is a calm and confident guide to a sea that knows relatively few tremendous storms but whose waters and storms have been the satting an exciting and varied history' -- History Today 20050901 'This is not a book about shipping per se, but a compelling history of Scandinavia, Russia, the Baltic states and an area of Europe so very different from those bordering the Mediterranean.' -- Lloyd's List 20050715 'Palmer's panorama perceptively grasps the inter-relationships of the Baltic nations within European history...a timely reminder to the EU...that "past history has seemed to haunt present politics"' -- Geographical Magazine 20050901 'Fascinating' -- BBC History 20051001 'The Baltic played a crucial role in the shaping of modern Europe, as Alan Palmer demonstrates in this engaging historical panorama ... Vivid and readable ... [He] recounts his story in the lucid, unjudgmental diction he has made his own ... He makes characteristically deft use of historical comparison ... Palmer also has an admirable eye for telling detail' -- Christopher Clark, Sunday Telegraph 20050703 'This cauldron of jostling powers is summed up in a single sweep, and in irrestistibly lively style' -- Michael Kerrigan, Scotsman 20050702 'With his deep knowledge of European history, Alan Palmer is the ideal guide to the variety, intricacy and drama of Baltic history. The conflicts, customs and culture, as well as the personalities of this neglected region come to life in these pages. Any traveller to the Baltic will take this book and be both instructed and entertained by its broad, fast-flowing panorama.' -- Sir Martin Gilbert 20050310 '[Alan Palmer] has proved yet again that in the field of popular history probably his only rival is Sir Martin Gilbert ... very well researched and written in a simple, elegant prose style' -- Konstantin Eggert, The Tablet 20050716 'A story rich in fascinating and formidable characters ... Alan Palmer steers a skilful course through this maze of material' -- The Spectator 20050730 'A fine example of the skills that have brought him [Palmer] fame and fortune ... he handles complex material so logically and elegantly that the reader can easily digest a diet of unfamiliar names and places ... grippingly described' -- The Economist 20050716

Northern Shores: A History of the Baltic Sea and Its Peoples
By John F. Lynch
A surprisingly good read. Crammed with interesting, informative, and beyond that, engaging facts from history that I've never heard before. I do recommend getting the Oxford Atlas of World History along with it, if you are a person who likes to know where events are taking place. The maps in the book are fine but there are only three of them and the Oxford is a very fine product in itself.

I think Northern Shores illustrates in candid details all the strife, mayhem, and frustration caused by people needing to choose leaders who need to rally the troops and expand the benefits to themselves and their people by using religion or any other means they can claim. I'm just up to about 1900 now but whatever happens here on out I won't be disappointed.

an excellent narrative
By Raimonds
To define the Baltic Sea region these days is the challenge in itself, since during the last half a century the region has been divided and deprived of its proper identity. Alan Palmer has done it brilliantly, by illustrating how once noisy and bustling sea and its shores had been coveted by different regional powers, which wished to convert it into the inner lake of their respective empires. The sea, however, more often in the past had separated than united its shores. The author reveals, that despite all efforts, none of regional players in long term has ever managed to consolidate its power on the opposite shores of the Baltic Sea.

The book is written from the perspective of that of the British sailor, which inevitably shifts the focus of the whole story of more than thousand years of the region's history in the direction to the Western part of the Baltic Sea. Oresund, but not the Gulf of Finland here is where the sea begins and where the keys to the Northern shores are hidden. But all in all - what you will read will not be a toothless summary, but an historical account embellished with interesting and spicy details. To name just one - as it turns out, Countess Sybille von Bismarck, a niece of the Iron Chancellor shot herself at the age of eighty-one. You can guess as to when it happened!

About the Book:OPERATION Blue Star is one of the most controversial, holly-debated military operations in the world and certainly one which will be regarded as a turning point in contemporary Indian history.
This is an account by the Army officer who led it - touchingly honest, often anguished, minutely detailed. It is perhaps the most accurate and fascinating piece of reporting that we shall ever have on "one of the most extraordinary, sensitive and traumatic operations in military history." It hides nothing - not the unexpected reverses suffered by the Army, nor its miscalculations, nor the grit and determination of the militants it was assigned to flush out. Detailed operational sketch maps, photographs and documentary authentication lend credence to a detailed chronological account with all its traumas, breathstopping climaxes and inevitable denouements.
While demolishing many myths, criticisms and half-truths, it seeks bravely to answer many of the questions that plague not only Sikhs but all Indians.
The author, who was involved in the planning and execution of the Operation at every stage, is perhaps the only one who really knows what exactly transpired on the fateful night of 5 June 1984. This is his story. The whole truth. And nothing but the truth.
About the Author: PVSM, AVSM, VrC, ADC, was born in 1934 at Lahore in the then undivided India. He was educated at the Doon School, Dehra Dun.
