There are so many things inside the human body. If, even once, man could discover his body in meditation, truly he would benefit a great deal from it. Who knows what there is in this body! There are so many chakras just in the head, so many different springs welling with nectar, so many clusters of nerve filaments, so many kinds of musical harmonies, so many different fragrances; there are rays from so many different suns, abodes of so many different deities. Though all this is inside him, man, tragically caught in his delusion, indulges himself in the arid world outside.

Recommended reading for students of eastern philosophy.
By Midwest Book Review
In Play Of Consciousness: A Spiritual Autobiography, Swami Muktananda vividly and candidly describes his spiritual initiation which awakened the hidden power known as Kundalini Shakti and the astonishing process of inner transformation that followed. Muktananda reveals many mysteries describing the rigors of spiritual practice and the mystical, metaphysical alchemy of the awakened Kundalini. He offers inspiration for all those seeking the ultimate personal and metaphysical freedom that is spiritual enlightenment. Play Of Consciousness is recommended reading for students of eastern philosophies, yoga, metaphysical studies, and personal spiritual enlightenment.

An amazing account of a spiritual transformation.
By A Customer
Muktananda was the first person to ever publish such an intimate account of a spiritual transformation. A great read, a comfort for those on the path, and an eye opener for those that are not. No holds barred.

Okay
By Adam Rose
Those familiar with Muktananda are probably aware of both his spiritual attainments and his transgressions into violence and agression and greed and sexual escapades. There is plenty of material on the internet to read about this. Still, I decided to read his book since I don't ever count anyone out, since often times the most controversial figures are the most brilliant.

The book has a great deal of focus on honoring one's guru and meditative experiences, both of which did not interest me much at all. I believe the age of the guru is coming to an end now, and although his devotion to his guru may have been genuine, in retrospect it stinks of him wanting to have others be devoted to him in a similar way. The meditative experiences are so far removed from my experience that I could not relate to them, but perhaps they may be interesting to people who have gone to amazing states of awareness themselves. If you are interested in Muktananda, I would recommend reading about his background before you read this book to decide if you want to spend your time reading the words of a man who abused and manipulated his followers, taking hypocrisy to its extreme. If you believe that is all crazy wisdom, then go for it. I would recommend Osho's or UG Krishamurti's books far more than this one though.

Update: I finished the book in its entirety after getting hung up on the exhaustive account of his meditation practices, and feel inclined to write that I am very grateful now for Swami Muktananda and his wisdom and life story. His words regarding devotion are simple and beautiful, and he uses ancient texts nicely to support his words. Briefly, I would rate the first section of the book about his devotion to his guru 4 stars, the second section about his meditations 3 stars, and the last section about everything else 5 stars. I believe this book is well worth reading, and we should all be thankful to controversial figures like Muktananda who had the courage to go deep down the rabbit hole. If not for gurus like him, we would be stuck with two dimensional whitebread men who would bore us all to pieces. I can place more confidence in my judgment of him based on his words than the stories that have surfaced about his life, and that is how I choose to view him now.

Spymaster: Dai Li and the Chinese Secret Service, by Frederic Wakeman

The most feared man in China, Dai Li, was chief of Chiang Kai-shek's secret service during World War II. This sweeping biography of "China's Himmler," based on recently opened intelligence archives, traces Dai's rise from obscurity as a rural hooligan and Green Gang blood-brother to commander of the paramilitary units of the Blue Shirts and of the dreaded Military Statistics Bureau: the world's largest spy and counterespionage organization of its time.

In addition to exposing the inner workings of the secret police, whose death squads, kidnappings, torture, and omnipresent surveillance terrorized critics of the Nationalist regime, Dai Li's personal story opens a unique window on the clandestine history of China's Republican period. This study uncovers the origins of the Cold War in the interactions of Chinese and American special services operatives who cooperated with Dai Li in the resistance to the Japanese invasion in the 1930s and who laid the groundwork for an ongoing alliance against the Communists during the revolution that followed in the 1940s. Frederic Wakeman Jr. illustrates how the anti-Communist activities Dai Li led altered the balance of power within the Chinese Communist Party, setting the stage for Mao Zedong's rise to supremacy. He reveals a complex and remarkable personality that masked a dark presence in modern China—one that still pervades the secret services on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Wakeman masterfully illuminates a previously little-understood world as he discloses the details of Chinese secret service trade-craft. Anyone interested in the development of modern espionage will be intrigued by Spymaster, which spells out in detail the ways in which the Chinese used their own traditional methods, in addition to adapting foreign ways, to create a modern intelligence service.

Review
Drawing on new archival sources, [Wakeman] has written less a biography of a man than an autopsy of Chiang's China, --"Wall Street Journal"

From the Inside Flap
"A tour de force. Wakeman combines his vast knowledge of Chinese history, his own work on China's police, his skill as a storyteller, and his ten years of being entranced with Dai Li, Chiang Kaishek's Himmler, to bring to life one of China's most imaginative and horrible demons."—Ezra F. Vogel, author of One Step Ahead: Guangdong Under Reform

"Wakeman masterfully pieces together, in fascinating and extraordinary detail, the rise of Chiang Kai-shek’s top spymaster, Dai Li. Spymaster captures Dai’s persona, explains the extraordinary personal trust Chiang placed in him, and reveals how Dai wielded power from the end of the 1920s to his death in 1946. This comprehensive and meticulous volume brings us into the core structures of Chiang’s power and sheds light on many previously dark corners of the Republican body politic. It deeply enriches our knowledge not only of Dai Li and of the Chinese secret service but also of this entire period in Republican China"—Kenneth Lieberthal, author of Governing China: From Revolution Through Reform

"If Sherlock Holmes had been an historian, the result might have been Frederic Wakeman’s astonishing and enthralling story of Dai Li, longtime master of a vast secret world of political intrigue, police terror, drug smuggling, and predatory sex, but also America’s collaborator in WWII, whose fingerprints are all over decades of China’s twentieth-century history. Thanks to the mountain of evidence uncovered by Wakeman, Dai Li is no longer ‘the mystery man of Asia.’"—Stephen F. Cohen, author of Failed Crusade: America and the Tragedy of Post-Communism Russia

Eastern Intellegence
By Timothy L Mayer
Spymaster: Dai Li and the Chinese Secret Service by Frederic Wakeman, is the only book I have been able to find on the reclusive man who served as General Chiang Kai-shek's security chief. General Dai Li was a reclusive man who was fiercely loyal to the generalissimo and did every thing he could to see the him stay in power. The book is a scholarly work which is written with a ton of references and foot notes. Unfortunately, it doesn't give us much of a glimpse of the human side of Dai Li.

Dai Li rose to prominence in with General Chiang after the failure of the 1911 Chinese revolution. The Manchu dynasty finally abdicated after the country was being ripped apart by civil war. The nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) party led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen led the first election in Chinese history, only to watch everything collapse a few years later when regional war lords declared sovereignty. In the 1920's, Chiang Kai-shek, who had been chancellor at the nationalist's Whampoa Military Academy assumed control of the KMT and led it until the day he died. China was tossed around by communist revolutions and regional war lords in the 1920's. In the 1930's it was encroached upon by Japanese imperialists. The generalissimo Chiang dealt with disunity in China by a northern campaign to bring the regional war lords under control He also pursued a scorched earth policy against the communists. Chaing tolerated the Japanese aggression until 1937 when China was officially at war with Japan. During WW2, the United States assisted the nationalists and communists against the Japanese. After the war, the communists were able to seize control of all of mainland China, pushing the nationalists off to a few coastal islands where they remain today.

Dai Lee was another rural young man on the make when he finally joined up with General Chiang's entourage. His family owned some land, but Dai's father had squandered it away. Bored with his education as a school teacher and arranged marriage, he traveled to the big town looking for opportunities. He found it by supplying the generalissimo with daily reports on his own. Eventually, General Chiang noticed the bright young man in the background and appointed him to security chief. Dai Li became so powerful he was known as Chiang Kai-sheck's "Himmler". Dai Li died in a mysterious air plane crash in 1946.

This is a very scholarly book. The author takes great length to phonetically spell out chinese names and terms into English. Plus, he has no compunction at all in publishing the chinese characters for the same whenever necessary. Since so much of the primary sources are available only in Chinese, it's understandable. Given the author was a professor of Chinese history at UCLA, the reader expects it. However, there is no attempt to explain many of the key historical incidents in the book. When the author talks about the hundred days reform of the Guangxu Emperor, he assumes you know what he's talking about. No footnote or glossary to explain. Ditto for the Long March and the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of 1937. Best to read this book with Wikipedia up unless you have a good grasp of modern Chinese history.

And thorough the mysterious life of Dai Li it emerges just how different traditional china is from traditional America. For instance, early in Dai Li's career, the joins a secret society devoted to the generalissimo. Called the Society for Vigorous Practice, General Chiang chairs its first gathering clad in a blue scholar's robe and assigns essay topics. At further meetings he appears in the same garb and grades papers. Huh? One could hardly imagine General Dwight D Eisenhower conduction a bible class dressed as a school master. But in Chinese society, the role of the Confucian scholar was very honored and respected. There is no equivalent in the west.

Wakeman shows how Dai Li was ruthless in his persecution of the generalissimo's enemies. Dai Li maintained his own network of secret prisons and interrogation centers. No one know how many people he killed during his extermination campaign against political rivals. At the same time, Dai Li's agents penetrated the network of spies and saboteurs the invading Japanese army utilized in its occupation of China. There's even a reproduction of the joint of the terms of the Sino-American Special Technical Cooperation Agreement with the government of China in 1943.

But the Dai Li which emerges from the book is a hidden man. No matter how much the author quotes the people who knew him, he never seems to come alive. This was as how Dai Li would have prefered it. He kept innumerable houses and cars, never sleeping in the same location whenever possible. He was the man who infiltrated the Japanese army and Chinese communist party with his agents. But in the end of the book, he remains an enigma.

Development and Regulation of Non-Bank Financial Institutions, by Jeffrey Carmichael, Michael Pomerleano

The principal role played by the financial system in any country is to provide the infrastructure to allow surplus resources to be allocated to those individuals and companies with deficits. The positive impact of a functioning financial system upon economic growth of a country is well documented. In most countries, the financial system extends beyond traditional banking institutions to include insurance companies, mutual funds, market makers and other financial service providers. These non-bank financial institutions provide services that are not necessarily suited to banks, serve as competition to banks, and specialize in sectors or groups. Having a multi-faceted financial system, which includes non-bank financial institutions, can protect economies from financial shocks. However, in developing countries that lack a coherent policy framework and effective regulations, non-bank financial institutions can exacerbate the fragility of the financial system.

This book helps build an awareness of the potential of non-bank financial institutions for developing countries. It aims to assist policymakers in the creation of coherent policy structures, and sound regulatory and supervisory environments for the development of these institutions. It assists policymakers in learning the essential functions and characteristics of non-bank financial institutions with select chapters on insurance companies, mutual funds and pension schemes, securities markets, and leasing and real estate companies.

Making Failure Feasible: How Bankruptcy Reform Can End Too Big to FailFrom Hoover Institution Press

In 2012, building off work first published in 2010, the Resolution Project proposed that a new Chapter 14 be added to the Bankruptcy Code, exclusively designed to deal with the reorganization or liquidation of the nation’s large financial institutions. In Making Failure Feasible, the contributors expand on their proposal to improve the prospect that our largest financial institutions—particularly with prebankruptcy planning—could be successfully reorganized or liquidated pursuant to the rule of law and, in doing so, both make resolution planning pursuant to Title I of Dodd-Frank more fruitful and make reliance on administrative proceedings pursuant to Title II of Dodd-Frank largely unnecessary. This book highlights the problems of dealing with large financial institutions in distress, and Chapter 14’s responses to those twin issues. The contributors first outline the basic features of Chapter 14 and point to their continuation as well as additional features to ensure the quick resolution of large financial institutions that would not depend on government discretion and would mesh with emerging ideas about cross-border resolution. The remaining chapters provide the context for reform and show how Chapter 14, as envisioned in this book, would be a substantial advance on administrative-focused resolution procedures.

Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd, by Mark Blake

In July 2005 in Hyde Park, Pink Floyd performed together on stage for the first time in 24 years with founder member Roger Waters. Almost a year later, reclusive founder-member Syd Barrett died and then in 2008 the death of keyboard player Rick Wright confirmed there would be no more reunions of one of the world's biggest bands. In this superbly comprehensive and engrossing history of the group, Mark Blake tells how a group of Cambridge school friends went on to conquer the world with classic albums like Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, and put on some of the most spectacular shows of all time. Drawing on over a hundred original interviews, Pigs Might Fly follows Pink Floyd all the way from the early psychedelic nights at UFO in the mid-sixties through the acrimonious schism, to the recent appearances of David Gilmour and Nick Mason with Roger Waters at the London date on his The Wall tour. Meticulous, exacting and ambitious as any Pink Floyd album, Pigs Might Fly has rightly been acclaimed as the definitive book on the band.

Review
New York Press, 1/20/09
“You really do feel as if you’re being sucked into the drama. That’s a testament to Blake doing his job…It’s a journalistic take on the band, and its reads like a history book. It’s respectful and revealing, but not in a scandalous way.”

Blurt Magazine, 2/09
“Mark Blake has clearly done his share of research…Blake is at his best [when] providing those details that leap off the page while placing Pink Floyd squarely in the context of the times.”

A great book about a mysterious, if not great band
By G.M.Ilenda
Pink Floyd had always been elusive to the rest of the world, namely music critics and the fans who gobbled up their albums with no real knowledge of who they were. Syd Barrett played a significant role first as song writer and lead guitarist, then acid casualty who was dismissed from the band after their first album. This exhaustive book revisits those people and places that made Pink Floyd a household name in rock music. I was impressed at the sheer volume of research concerning Syd Barrett and his downfall from the world of pop music. Equally impressive was the inclusion of Dave Gilmour, who taught Syd how to play guitar when they were just teenagers in late 1950's Britain. The stroke of genius was Dave Gilmour joining the band in 1968, saving the Floyd from being a footnote to the psychedelic music craze that briefly saw "Swinging London" rave ups, and hemp smoke filled dance halls. Pink Floyd would create a new direction with Gilmour, and albums such as Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, and the universally accepted Dark Side of the Moon forever brought them fame and fortune, all the while Syd's specter loomed in the background, as lyricist Roger Waters would build a career on isolation and madness from his departed friend. This fine book covers all the history of Pink Floyd from the early jams in 1964 right up to 2007. No stone is left unturned in this literary history of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. A must read for any hard core or casual Floyd fan. All of your questions will be answered.

I like his sound better anyway
By srhdds
Been a fan of the Floyd for many years, so the book interested me tremendously. I now understand why the group imploded, and learning about Roger Waters personality has helped me accept it. I hope David Gilmour continues to provide new material. I like his sound better anyway, but wish the group could have persisted and produced more music like Dark Side Of The Moon.

Very comprehensive
By Stewart Cannon
This is definitely the most comprehensive of the Pink Floyd biographies I have seen. Lots of insights on what may have happened to Syd (and Rick Wright for that matter), and a lot on the ego war that eventually tore the band apart. Unlike a lot of the bands that came out of London at the time, these guys came from the intelligentsia and artisans of Cambridge and London, and were not from the working classes at all.
