About the Author
MARILYN K. SIMON, PhD, has been actively involved in Mathematics and Computer Education since 1969 and has taught all levels of mathematics and study skill development from preschool through graduate school with extraordinary results. She has published numerous books on mathematics education, scholarly research, high stakes test-preparation, and online learning. Dr. Simon is a faculty member at Walden University and the University of Phoenix, School of Advanced Studies, where she supervises doctoral students. She is also one of the nation's authorities on overcoming math anxiety and online learning, and conducts workshops and seminars for the University of California, Webster University; Upper Iowa University Online, and for school districts and businesses across the nation, and is an international lecturer on online learning and women and mathematics. Dr. Simon is also the president of MathPower, and co-founder of Best-Prep, educational consulting firms. She has conducted post doctorate research at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, NJ, and was selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America, and as a mathematics education delegate to South Africa.

The signs of a good book for doctoral students nervous about writing a dissertation, overwhelmed and daunted by the complexity of the task that lies ahead is the skill of presenting concepts in easy to read sections. Simon and Goes accomplishes this hands down. Turning the process of writing a dissertation into a practical guide using the metaphor of "planning and preparing a gourmet feast for a gathering of distinquished guests" which are your dissertation committee you are now the head chef of your dissertation preparation. I am a doctoral student and for the sake of full disclosure, I selected Dr. Simon as my methods member for my dissertation committee. Simon's reputation for her exceptual support of doctoral students preceded her. However I also based my selection of Dr. Simon, regardless of the fact that she taught in a different school in my university, was her skill how to teach me on how to prepare an entire dissertation holistically by breaking up the process into understandble sections. Simon prepared me to become a creative doctoral dissertation chef and Simon and Goes text was my dissertation cookbook. Every doctoral student I assume looks for a methods person for their dissertation who will be able to explain what I think is the most difficult part, the research methodolgy. By breaking up the entire dissertation into simple understandable terms approaching the research methodology is now just one of the ingredients you add into the mix and not just a looming and unattached part of your disseration. There are many books and articles on how to write a dissertation. So why purchase Simon and Goes book? A book on how to write a dissertation regardless of the use of an excellent metaphor,in my view is the choice of references that informs the heart of the content. Simon and Goes exceeds here as well as they cite many of the best scholars in the field including but not limited to; Creswell, Babbie, and seminal grounded theory research methodologists Glaser and Strauss. I highly recommend that every doctoral student a year before you start writing your dissertation buy this text. Keep it by your side at all times. By all means you also need to read other textbooks from Hart, Creswell, and Babbie etc. to gain new perspectives and knowledge, but now you will have gained first a strong conceptual understanding with Simon's and Goes.

Best Book

I serve as the chair on numerous doctoral study committees and highly recommend this book to all of my students. The writing is thorough, clear and easy to follow. After reading this book a student would have all the information they need to publish a professional, scholarly dissertation. If all of my students used this book it would make both of our lives much easier! Having all the necessary information in one convenient location in an easy to read book makes a big difference in a students ability to master all the details necessary to successfully complete their doctoral study. When students have to use multiple instructional guides from many different sources it further complicates an already difficult process. By following the step by step instructions a student might be able to complete their work in record time. Anyone in need of expert advise from seasoned professionals should purchase this book. I sincerely hope all of my future students will have read this book.

As presented in the forward to "Dissertation and Scholarly Research: Recipes for Success", Jim Goes, PhD, describes Simon's "Recipes" as "A Dissertation Guide for Professional Learners". Because currently, scholarly research and doctoral learning generally takes place in less traditional settings, innovative learning aids are necessary. For example, busy professionals pursuant to the research-based dissertation, which is the hallmark of most doctoral programs, need a guide in the non-traditional arena, such as on-line learning. Simon's innovative "Recipes" guides one along the doctoral journey concerning the choice of research topic, development of a conceptual and methodological framework, the proper techniques to collect and analyze data to solve the research problem and answer the research question, and the implementation of the dissertation to ensure a high quality study for presentation and defense.
Dr. Simon is probably the perfect author for a dissertation guide for professional learners, especially learners in the non-traditional setting. Simon has been instrumental in computer education since 1969 and is a faculty member at Walden University and the University of Phoenix, School of Advanced Studies, where she supervises doctoral learners. Simon has successfully mentored many doctoral learners through to dissertation publication, and has served on many dissertation committees.
As a doctoral learner in a non-traditional setting, I encountered a cohort at second year residency who was extremely appreciative of Dr. Simons "Recipes for Success". When I returned from residency, I purchased "Dissertation and Scholarly Research: Recipes for Success" because of the credence I developed in my cohort's opinion resulting from the professionalism and confidence present in her prospectus presentation. Basically, chapters one through three of my cohort's proposal was complete, which was far more advanced than most at residency. And this success occurred before the choosing of a mentor! My cohort advised that I purchase Dr. Simon's book because it was the answer to her prayers and it might provide the same assistance to me.
My cohort at second year residency was correct to advise me to purchase Simon's book. Every turn of the page suggests how to overcome the next challenge in pursuit of my doctoral dissertation. Advice is given from taking care of me physically and mentally through to dissertation completion. I have already advanced 10-fold in the formulation of my prospectus because of my increased understanding of the dissertation process, and expect to have my proposal completed on schedule. Recipes is a must have! I am looking forward to completing and serving my "Feast!"
