Great book, but consider getting the CD instead

This Bentley repair manual is actually very, very good. It's a massive book with loads of useful information about the Jetta. It is so much better than what I had (which was the web). It is better than the typical Chilton or Hayes manuals, which I've owned a dozen of over the years.

I'm fairly mechanically inclined. I change the fluids and do all the routine maintenance myself. I had even changed the timing belt twice before getting the manual. When I go looking to a manual, I'm looking for details that can't be readily observed by a somewhat competent shade tree mechanic/driving enthusiast.

When I bought the manual, I was repairing a couple electrical issues on my TDI Jetta (bad fan control module and failed fan) and despite having a decent electrical diagram, it did not have enough information to actually diagnose the exact problem. I got further information from the Bentley support forums (yeah, the guys that write the book support the purchasers of it!) and learned that the electronic version has the additional information I was needing. Specifically, pinouts of components along with methods for testing individual components (such as, apply 12v here, jumper pins 2 and 3, and X should happen. If not, Y is defective). This book has some of that, but not enough.

Having that information is the difference between knowing for certain if buying a particular non-returnable electrical component will actually fix the problem.

Service Manual for Volkswagens

I can honestly say that this is the manual I recommended to all of my Volkswagen owning friends. All of them. Surprisingly all of them bought it. Not only does this manual help me fix problems that are serious to moderate to just plain weird it helps me learn alot about my car as well. It helped me learn the things I need to get my car "Bella" the Volkswagen in a better shape. I recently had to change my water pump and I was going to take it to the mechanic which cost me alot of money, and instead of taking it to the mechanic I used the simple knowlege and the manual and I changed my water pump. Yes it has that too.
By learning and reading the manual everytime I need to use it I am able to fix other cars as well that are Volkswagens. This knowledge that I gain from this great manual will stick with me forever. I am very satisfied with it. I am very thankful that I bought it and alot of my other friends that own the manual are thankful as well. It trully is worth every penny that you spend when you buy this awesome manual.

Bentley's Mini Cooper Service Manual

After 20 years of using Bentley manuals I expected a better product. The manual is ok as a basic repair manual, but lacks the in depth details that one would expect from advanced manuals. One thing this manual does that really drives me nuts is how it constantly refers you to other sections of the manual in order to complete one single task. That may be ok if you're sitting down in your living room reading over a repair, but when you're in the garage and you're hands are covered in grease skipping around a service book it's a pain. It comes across as the publisher is too cheap to reprint the information. Aren't repair manuals supposed to simplify the repair process? I do have to say that the electrical portion of the manual is up to the standards that I would expect from Bentley. Fortunately, as weak as this manual is, it is still better than any other Mini Cooper manual I have seen.

Invaluable Resource

This is a wonderful reference book highlighting important holidays from all over the world. I had a copy years ago when I lived overseas and thought it lost until it turned up in an old box in my garage... after almost ten years of looking for it!. Seriously, I can't praise this book enough. It also has wonderful information regarding the lunar calender and how most if not all major religions use this alternate cycle of measuring time.

I loved this book! I was so upset when it was stolen in 1988. I fuzzed and fumed and searched - for years! I am so happy I found two copies on Amazon - bought both of them so I can give one to my now grown daughter and keep one for myself.

About the Author

Elaine Leeder is Professor of Sociology and Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Sonoma State University. She holds an MSW from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work of Yeshiva University, a Masters of Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Cornell University. From 1977 to 2001, she taught in the sociology department at Ithaca College and coordinated the social work minor. She teaches courses on social change, family violence and the treatment and prevention of family violence and social policy. She has written books and articles on radical women's history, treatment of child abuse perpetrators, domestic violence, and spirituality.

This is an awesome book for Sociology 105!

I am taking Sociology 105 in college, and I had to buy this book for that class. I like this book pretty much. It is pretty easy to understand the concepts the book adresses (not because of the simplicity of its language use, but because of its great ways of explanations). I also like many of the good ideas in there. When one reads this book, however, he/she needs to learn to look at it in an objective way (basing your judgments on facts rather than opinion) and look at the facts described in this book as thing that are really out there (even though you may not like them). That's just how the world is! And after reading this book, you can reason with yourself if your way thinking is still a good one... (?)

The one flaw in their budding relationship is her own insecurity. She'd been in an abusive situation before, and doesn't trust her judgment. She has been on her own for so long, can she let Max in? Or will her need for independence force him away?

TAKING A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

What a fun addition to the Bentley Sisters, this time with the wayward traveling Elise. She is out of country and in remote places taking photographs and leaving her sisters to constantly worry about her and her safety. When she takes this assignment to the Canadian Arctic to photograph the Arctic wolves, her brother-in-laws insist that she have a trained guide, but not just anyone, a friend with the same beliefs as them. Max Bryant is a good friend and former Army buddy of Tom Sinclair and has the experience of the Canadian Arctic. As Elise soon learns by example, she is over Max's knee for being careless. But soon these two take being in the wilderness to another level of intimacy. The story was extremely enjoyable, with the dialogue of the various wildlife they witnessed for her to photographed as these two become friends and lovers.

I enjoyed this story. Although it was a little short it definitely made up in the story line. The characters were believable as well as the relationship. You understood her bed for freedom as well as stability. I hope there's a next one.

Independence or nothing?

If you have read the rest of the Bentley Sisters novels, you will be pleased to read this one and find out there's a man out there that catches Elise's attention! Elise is used to taking care of herself on her trips as a wildlife photographer, and she's proud of her independence. All of her sisters' men take exception to that attitude and are more than a little concerned that Elise takes unnecessary risks. Max, a friend of Elise's brother-in-law Tom, is asked to act as a guide and provide protection for Elise as she explores the Arctic wilderness. Max takes his role seriously and makes it clear to Elise that he will spank her if she puts herself in danger; Elise is a bit surprised that she isn't really bothered by that idea. This is a DD story that is focused on Elise and Max. Other characters are referred to, but most do not have an active role in the book. It was a bit short but enjoyable, and I hope that there's at least one more book. How will the rest of their story unfold?

A compelling combination of war stories and photographs

"Shaped by War" is an overview of Don McCullin's life and work as a war photographer. McCullin has covered many wars - from the beginnings of the Cold War in Berlin, to the 1960's conflicts in Cyprus and Vietnam, to Biafra, Bangladesh , Lebanon and El Salvador. Though I was an avid image hound as a child, I was generally unfamiliar with McCullin's work. But one picture jogged by memory. It was of an emaciated, 24-year-old Biafran woman who looked 80, holding an infant trying to suckle from her withered breast. The photo not only tells a story of the ravages of war on individual human beings, but it is a work of art as well. Shot in black and white, the dark tonality of the photo matches the grimness of the story,

While there were many good and even a few very good photos in this collection, there were relatively few standout images like the one of the Biafran mother. More engaging and interesting were McCullin's stories of accompanying soldiers on their trek through jungles, of evading capture and of intervening to save lives. If the photos were work-a-day, his harrowing stories of bravery, courage and kindness under fire told the story of the risks that journalists take to cover the news in far-flung regions.
