About the Author

SIFU SHI YAN MING, a 34th-generation Shaolin Warrior monk, is respected not only in the martial arts world, but also in the entertainment world by stars like Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes and the Wu-Tang clan. His kung fu classes have been featured in USA Today, the New York Times, New York Daily News, and Entertainment Weekly. Brian Gray of Inside Kung Fu magazine has called him a "living treasure of China." He lives in New York City.

"In mastering your body and your mind, you will master your life"

This book is fantastic! Shi Yan Ming is very inspiring, in both his workout and his philosophy of life. His happiness and positive attitude shines through on every page. You will learn stretches, kicks, punches, and a Shaolin workout, but most importantly you will learn the philosophy of kung fu. As Master Shi Yan Ming says, "Kung fu isn't just an exercise routine. It is a philosophy of life. The action is the philosophy. The philosophy is the action."

Throughout the book there are interludes of "Meditation" in which he gives insights about life in general; these are very thought-provoking and interesting. Don't skip these! They are essential to the program. The stretches and workout will get you into good shape, but this is not a book to just learn self-defense moves, it's more to use as a mind-body workout to increase health, both mental and physical, and enhance confidence. I also liked reading about his journey, how he came to be a Shaolin monk living in New York City.

This book may just transform your life and your health!

Shaolin building a better me.

I've been in and out of the Martial Arts since I was six years old. Years ago I suffered a back injury which due to not being able to do anything without intense pain for years turned my abs from a six pack into a keg. I have since slowly rebuilt my back and have wanted to get back into full fighting form (the fittest I've ever been).

Literally I have skill, practice and ranking in the following forms: Hoshinsol, Tai Lung Young Tao, Tae Kwan Do, Tai Chi, Drunken Monkey, Togakure Ryu amongsts others. I am no master. But for me I was competent and skilled enough to be happy in life. Right before my serious back injury at work, I started practicing some Capoeira (which fortunately for me was the only thing that stopped me from actually breaking my back). Literally I had ripped and tore every muscle from my shoulder blades down. I only refer to this to illustrate where I've been in life and the fact that rebuilding was hard, and I have looked at many various martial arts forms, instructional materials etc. to try to be a better me again.

Maybe my health wasn't right at the time for the other things I've tried, but now I have this book, and with practice people have remarked that I have been getting skinnier every time they see me, and they've told me that I am looking more fit. These workouts feel wonderful. My self esteem has increased. My back is stronger. I can see my abs again. My clothes feel larger and less constricting.

I have more energy throughout the day now and my old flexibility is coming back. Also to note: In one aspect I am now more flexible than I've ever been. And as the book says "Merry Christmas!" it's improved my whole mood and has raised my spirits (you should not skip the meditations in the book for they are wonderful as well).

A good way to change your life

I have this book and have been learning from it for about 2 weeks now. Therefore I would like to offer my opinions and maybe do away with any preconceived notions.

No, the workout itself will not take 15 minutes a day. At first it will take less than that and then later it would take a bit longer. No, you will not attain a Shaolin warrior's physique within 28 days nor be able to have a good enough grasp of Shaolin kung-fu to take on 10 guys like Jet Li.

However, what is great about this book is that it gives you a viable, well-rounded exercise regimen. This is especially true for guys like me who are forced to a more sedentary lifestyle and have no time to even go on a treadmill after work. In fact, I do a lot of these exercises in the parking lot outside my office when I needed to a take a few breaks in between tasks.

By using this book and doing the exercises, you are get to develop a habit of taking care of yourself. Instead of plunging into a new lifestyle that will leave you burnt out in the end, you get to ease into it day by day. At the end of the 28 days, at least speaking from my point of view, you will have that exercise system that you can train for the rest of your life.

For those who do a different martial art, such as taekwondo or karate, this is a valueable way to do some cross training and take yourself to a whole new level. You'll be doing stretches and moves you have never done before and it will improve your aptitude in your chosen martial art.
