Poisoned: How a Crime-Busting Prosecutor Turned His Medical Mystery into a Crusade for Environmental Victims, by Alan Bell

After years of prosecuting hard-core criminals, rising legal star Alan Bell took a private sector job in South Florida’s newest skyscraper. Suddenly, he suffered such bizarre medical symptoms, doctors suspected he’d been poisoned by the Mafia. Bell’s rapidly declining health forced him to flee his glamorous Miami life to a sterile “bubble” in the remote Arizona desert.

As his career and marriage dissolved, Bell pursued medical treatments in a race against time, hoping to stay alive and raise his young daughter, his one desperate reason to keep going. He eventually discovered he wasn’t poisoned by a criminal, but by his office building. His search for a cure led him to discover the horrifying truth: his tragedy was just the tip of the iceberg. Millions of people fall ill and die each year because of toxic chemical exposures―without knowing they’re at risk.

Stunned by what he discovered, Bell chose to fight back, turning his plight into an opportunity. Despite his precarious health, he began collaborating with scientists dedicated to raising awareness about this issue. Soon, he also found himself drawn back into the legal field, teaming up with top lawyers fighting for those who had already fallen ill.

Both a riveting medical mystery and a cautionary tale, this book puts a human face on the hidden truths behind toxic dangers assaulting us in our everyday environments―and offers practical ways to protect ourselves and our children.

Alan Bell's Memoir is a Must Read
By C Baker
Alan Bell's memoir tells the story of an ambitious young lawyer in South Florida with a bright future whose life gets turned upside down by a mysterious illness.

We follow Bell from the glamorous and exciting life of a South Florida prosecutor in the 80's at the prestigious 110 Tower, to a life in exile in a sterile bubble in the Arizona desert. In his search for a cure and relief, he traveled the country and saw hundreds of doctors. From time at a "leper colony", to a castle in Mexico, to the beaches of California, Bell never gave up on his quest to find answers.

Ultimately, this is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and how one man, driven by his own suffering, the love of his daughter, and his desire to help others, became an advocate and avenger.

Although charities to help those afflicted by mutiple chemical sensitivities existed, Bell took note of the fact that there wasn't enough being done to prevent illness and a lack of awareness of the dangers chemicals pose to human health. He founded the Environmental Health Foundation (EHF) and managed to recruit the nation's top scientists and experts on environmentally linked illnesses to form the scientific advisory board. Though too ill to attend the first summit, he got NIH to sponsor and enjoyed the endorsement and support of celebrities and then VP Al Gore.

Alan Bell isn't just an advocate for those who suffer multiple chemical sensitivies, but for all of us. His story is not only deeply moving and inspirational, but a lesson to us all about the dangers that surround us.

On moving day painters and carpet installers are completing their duties inside this new and beautiful structure. Life is good
By daveyd
Picture this: You are a respected organized crime prosecutor and on one sunny day you are hired to be one of Travelers Insurance Company's attorneys. You will occupy a prestigious suite near the top of the thirty floors. On moving day painters and carpet installers are completing their duties inside this new and beautiful structure.
Life is good,,, until one morning in 1989 you awaken to burning eyes, running nose, stinging skin and shortness of breath. Eventually joints and muscles became just painful receptacles and digestible foods excluded all options except quinoa, almonds, cod, lentils and salads--- only organic. The author drove an "ancient car' because chemical sensitivities from newer car materials created epileptic type seizures.
The author discarded his contemporary wardrobe, could only tolerate organic cotton, had to wash newly purchased clothes multiple times to dilute flame retardants and purchased multiple mattresses because flame retardants and other chemicals caused episodic brain seizures and other maladies. And so the long journey into a feral future, with no calculus map for guidance is underway.
Dr. Abou-Donia of Duke University, and an authority on chemical toxins, believes that chemical exposures are the primary causes of chronic diseases including asthma, birth defects, autism, Alzheimers, diabetes, cancers, and others. Dr. Abou-Donia estimates that seventy thousand artificial chemicals are in commercial use today; more to come. The National Institutes of Health links 70% of all cancers to environmental pollutants. Worldwide some 682 pounds of toxic chemicals are released into our air, land, and water every second by industrial facilities. There is persistant lobbying against chemical regulation and they lock out real safety laws.
"Like Frankenstein, man has created a monster. More people become ill or die than are seriously injured by AIDS, auto accidents, war, and violent crime combined from exposure to environmental toxins while exacerbating health disorders such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, and cardio disease."
The author should know, having transitioned from a prosperous corporate lawyer to a semi-invalid overnight. No, not from an accident but from environmental toxins. From a dream-life of luxury the author would find himself living a nightmare in an isolated unit described by the author's wife at the time as "the leper colony", surrounded only by porcelain, steel, and glass. Other inhabitants "looked like victims of war, plague or some natural disaster." Eventually author Bell would suffer the loss of his career, of his health, of life's extreme luxuries, and even his wife. At six foot two inches tall Bell weighted in at 140.
If nothing else this manuscript from Alan Bell is a massive exposure of greed, corruption, and power as special interests unite in their opposition to
any shining light on dangerous chemicals. On page 194 author Bell describes how money interests had "brought me face-to-face with evil".
Indubitably.

A great read that reminds us that "evil can be found ...
By Kitty
A great read that reminds us that "evil can be found anywhere, even in our everyday environments and in seemingly “good” people". There is no doubt that better living through chemistry has improved the quality of our everyday lives. But Alan's story reminds us that the effects of synthetic chemical toxicants as well as naturally occurring toxins like mold are often insidious with non-specific adverse effects that leave us scratching our heads wondering why we feel weak or dizzy in the absence of an obvious cause such as a bump on the head.

This former crime busting prosecutor turned advocate shares his poignant memoir of how he went from working as a highly paid attorney in one of Florida's tallest skyscrapers to living like a hermit in a bubble in the Arizona desert as a result of "sick building syndrome". But the desert is not where Alan's story ends. Like the proverbial Phoenix, Alan rises from the ashes to retake control not only of his own destiny but that of other victims as well by becoming an environmental legal advocate. He goes on to share a few equally poignant stories of other victims he has met through his work an environmental lawyer before closing his book with a few good suggestions about how we can all reduce our risk for experiencing adverse effects from exposure to environmental toxicants and toxins without the need to move into a bubble.
