Differential Geometry and Lie Groups for Physicists, by Marián Fecko

Differential geometry plays an increasingly important role in modern theoretical physics and applied mathematics. This textbook gives an introduction to geometrical topics useful in theoretical physics and applied mathematics, covering: manifolds, tensor fields, differential forms, connections, symplectic geometry, actions of Lie groups, bundles, spinors, and so on. Written in an informal style, the author places a strong emphasis on developing the understanding of the general theory through more than 1000 simple exercises, with complete solutions or detailed hints. The book will prepare readers for studying modern treatments of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, electromagnetism, gauge fields, relativity and gravitation. Differential Geometry and Lie Groups for Physicists is well suited for courses in physics, mathematics and engineering for advanced undergraduate or graduate students, and can also be used for active self-study. The required mathematical background knowledge does not go beyond the level of standard introductory undergraduate mathematics courses.

Review
"The contents of this book cover a lot (if not most) of what a theoretical physicist might wish to know about differential geometry and Lie groups."
Hans-Peter Knzle, Mathematical Reviews

"All basic material that is necessary for a young scientist in the field of geometrical formulation of physical theories is included ... ordered and represented in a very appropriate manner ... with a great respect to the reader. ... I truly believe that reading this book will bring a real pleasure to all physically inclined young mathematicians and mathematically inclined young physicists ... a very good high level textbook ... [I] recommend it to all young scientists being interested in finding correspondence between harmony in the physical world and harmony in geometrical structures. ... well written, very well ordered and the exposition is very clear."
Journal of Geometry and Symmetry in Physics

"the contents of this book covers a lot (if not most) of what a theoretical physicist might wish to know about differential geometry and Lie groups. particularly useful may be that the modern formalism is always related to the classical one with tensor indices still mostly used in the physics literature."
American Mathematical Society

"... the presentation is almost colloquial and this makes reading rather pleasant. The author has made a concerted effort to give intuitive interpretations of complicated ideas such as: the Lie derivative, tensors, the Hodge star operator, Lie group representations, Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, parallel transport, connections, curvature, gauge theories, spinors and Dirac operators. This will be much appreciated by students (and even researchers, I think). ... an excellent reference for geometers."
Zentralblatt MATH

"Marin Fecko deftly guides you through the material step-by-step, with all the rigor, but without the pain. When going through the chapters, definition by definition, proof by proof and hint by hint, you get an impression of a caring, experienced (and often quirkily funny, but never boring) tutor who really, really wants you to succeed."
Sergei Slobodov, UBC for Physics in Canada

Differential geometry
By Michal Tarana
Marian Fecko's textbook covers well fundamental elements of modern differential geometry and introduction to the Lie groups (not only) from geometrical point of view. Geometrical formulations of the classical mechanics, gauge theory and classical electrodynamics are discussed.

The textbook expects the reader to be familiar with mathematical analysis on the level of the standard course usual in the physics undergraduate study programs. Understanding of the parts dealing with physical applications (classical mechanics and electrodynamics) expects knowledge of fundamental principles of these subjects. Organization of the book allows the reader to concern on particular part, i. e. understanding of later parts doesn't require reading of all previous parts (reading of parts concerning on the classical dynamics does not require reading of parts dealing with electrodynamics). However, relations between different subjects of the theory are explained instructively.

The main advantage of this textbook is that reader "builds" the subject himself by solving the exercises usually appended by hints. It makes all the elements of the theory natural to the reader during study. This way is a little bit more time consuming when compared with other textbooks dealing with this subject. It provides good starting point for study of mathematical aspects of the general relativity and field theories. I recommend this book to everybody who wants to understand fundamental concepts in differential geometry in detail.

Fairly good content, very bad exposition
By TreeTiger
There's no doubt about it: the material in this book is incredibly interesting and important for an ambitious physics student. The organization of the book is fairly good: informal passages relating the necessary theory alternate with exercises which are all written as "Check that..." or "Prove that...", which allows you to choose which results to prove and which to take as given facts if you -- for any reason -- don't feel like proving them.

However, the book also has some serious shortcomings. The most important one seems to be the horrid style. A book of mathematics for physicists should not be written just like a standard math textbook without proofs -- and this is exactly what this book is like. The definitions that are given are "mathematical" at heart; very rarely can one find an intuitive picture of what is going on immediately after a concept is introduced. On the other hand, the propositions that are not left as excercises are never proven. Granted, they might be intuitively clear, but that doesn't mean that their proofs are obvious. Due to all this, I have always felt a bit confused and certainly not comfortable with new concepts. The author's occasional attempts to "raise morale" by inserting jokes would always backfire because these jokes are so trivial that they seem offensively condecending. Take, for example, the sentence that finishes the introduction of a vector as the equivalence class of tangency of curves:

"And a good old arrow, which cannot be thought of apart from the vector, could be put at P in the direction of this bunch, too (so that it does not feel sick at heart that it had been forgotten because of some dubious novelties)." (p. 25)

So... first of all, this is probably not particularly funny. But more seriously: are we to conclude that the notion of vectors as "directed lines" is important only because otherwise the "good old arrow" (and the reader alike) would feel "sick at heart"? This is an example of a concept so intuitive that a joke like this is generally harmless; however, trouble arises when the same kind of explanation is applied to more abstract concepts (e.g. why not study non-Hausdorff spaces? The explanation given on p. 4 relates to Amazon Basin Indians).

Another important issue is that a large part of this book teaches you the principles of the mathematics behind the physics. This is fine, provided you learn how to operate with these principles; however, the book seldom teaches you how to *work* with the most basic concepts, and that's what the author promises to deliver in the preface.

Unfortunately, there are other issues as well. Introducing new, vital ideas in exercises *only* is one of them. Also, one would desire to know which ideas are crucial or well-worth meditating upon, and this is generally not given in the text. Finally, the excessively informal style prevents this book from being even a good reference.

All in all -- it is possible to learn a lot of new things from this book, but the effort probably isn't worth it.

The best book on the subject
By Ark
Before discovering the new book my Marian Fecko I thought I know all that I need about differential geometry (I co-authored a monograph on this subject myself). I had my favorite books: Kobayashi-Nomizu, Bishop-Crittenden, Sternberg, Michor, Abraham and some more. Yet "Differential Geometry and Lie Groups for Physicists" was a completely new experience. It is written with a "soul" and covers topics that are important but missing in other books. As I was working on a paper dealing with torsion, I emailed the Author with some of my ideas and questions and got an instant answer.

Readers looking for explanations and geometrical interpretations of the abstract concepts will certainly find this book irreplaceable. Lie and covariant derivatives, parallel transport, Hodge operator, Cartan's moving frame method, Laplace-Beltrami operator, Lie groups, Maxwell equations, Clifford algebras and spin bundles, SL(2,C), Dirac operator, Momentum map etc. etc. - all introduced and explained in a concise yet clear way, with exmaples and exercises.

This book should find its place on the bookshelf of everyone interested in geometrical concepts required for understanding contemporary theoretical physics.

I recommend this book to all students and professionals. It should find its place in every university library.

Just one warning: certain mathematical symbols did not find their way to the "Index of frequently used symbols" at the end of the book. The reader trying to read the book starting from p. 600 may find it necessary to spent some time going through the earlier chapters to find out the meaning of a given symbol.

Review of Halman's, Sieben's, and van Zundert's "Atlas of European values"
by Paul F. Ross

Loek Halman, Inge Sieben, and Marga van Zundert (2012) display findings from the European Values Study surveys done in 28 countries that are members of the European Union and in 18 countries, also European, that are not members of the European Union. The most recent results date from 2008 (47 countries) and other results, when available, date from 1981 (15 countries), 1990 (27 countries), and 1999 (33 countries). The matter of European identity is explored using four questions, family life using five

questions, life at work using five questions, religion using four questions, politics using five questions, social issues using seven questions, and well-being using three questions. The average result for the country is displayed ... sometimes as a percentage of those assenting to the statement, sometimes as the mean scale value from one to ten chosen by the respondent, sometimes as the percent of those choosing the optional answers offered by the surveyor, etc. The languages spoken in the countries surveyed - over thirty - are charted (page 7).

The Atlas is introduced by a statement by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council in October 2011. The European Council is composed of the heads of the governments belonging to the European Union. He wrote: "This Atlas of European Values provides a rich insight into the values and attitudes of the Europeans: more than 800 million people living on the `old' continent, both inside and outside the European Union's 27 member states. The atlas examines what Europeans value in family life, work, religion, politics, society, and well-being. With the underlying research spanning a generation in time, the Atlas also provides a picture of the important value transformations as well as of firm, incontestable beliefs. It is a treasure-trove of information on the wealth of opinions about Europe, and the forces that bind us in spite of our differences." The Atlas is presented in English. Only two of the 28 countries (Great Britain, Ireland) reported by the Atlas to be among the 47 countries surveyed have English as their principal languages. (I did not discover why the President of the European Council referred to 27 member states whereas the Atlas reports survey results from 28 member states.) The President's statement is the nearest declaration of the purpose for the report that I found. I have no insight into who the authors perceive to be the audience for their work except that that audience is expected to have a broad interest in Europe, probably identifying with Europe, to be moderately well educated ... probably as a college graduate, and, perhaps, to have leadership responsibilities in one capacity or another.

The Survey of European Values began in the late 1970s under initiatives by Ruud de Moor of Tilburg University and Jan Kerkhofs of Catholic University of Leuven, they accomplishing their first serious data collection in 15 European member states in 1981. Their "initiative was followed by non-European scientists and the project expanded into the World Values Survey (according to Halman, Luijkx, and van Zundert, 2005, p 11)." In 2005, they cite www.europeanvalues.nl and www.worldvaluessurvey.org as websites providing details about the questionnaires, survey methods, and the data themselves. The initiators of this work deserve high praise for its conception and the repeated carrying through of the work.

The 2012 Atlas has all but no list of references and no index. Its "acknowledgements" point to www.europeanvaluesstudy.eu as a source of information about the questionnaire, its translations, and the survey sampling. Not seeing the usual list of references and index, I asked a colleague about the scientific roots for this survey work and was given Inglehart's work on Modernization and postmodernization (1997) as a reference.

Halman, Sieben, and van Zundert have confined themselves to providing descriptive information about the average of the responses from individuals sampled in each country, showing the findings in map formats, and have omitted tracing the trends in attitudes and offering theories about what is happening and where the changes will lead in the future. These authors leave to the reader the task of deciding what the information and the trends mean ... a choice appealing to this reviewer as wiser than the choices made by Inglehart (1997). The informed citizen and the policymaker, however, not realizing the complexities underlying their expectations, may read these works by Halman and colleagues and grumble in frustration: "You are the experts. Tell me what this means."

I have reviewed Inglehart's work (1997), his data being derived from the World Values Surveys with roots stretching from about 1970 to about 1993, the 1993 data being the most recent survey data available to him at the time he was writing. Inglehart seeks to tell his readers what the data mean ... and I criticize him stoutly for his methods and conclusions although not for trying. I suspect, but cannot say with certainty, that Inglehart's data utilized the European Values Surveys of 1981 and 1990 and that some of my criticisms of Inglehart's work apply to the Halman reports of 2005 and 2012.

My review of Inglehart's report can be found on Amazon.com in association with Inglehart's name and his book's title. I have reviewed Halman's, Luijkx's, and van Sundert's Atlas (2005), a predecessor to this work (2012). The review can be found on Amazon.com.

What We Owe to Each Other, by T. M. Scanlon

How do we judge whether an action is morally right or wrong? If an action is wrong, what reason does that give us not to do it? Why should we give such reasons priority over our other concerns and values? In this book, T. M. Scanlon offers new answers to these questions, as they apply to the central part of morality that concerns what we owe to each other. According to his contractualist view, thinking about right and wrong is thinking about what we do in terms that could be justified to others and that they could not reasonably reject. He shows how the special authority of conclusions about right and wrong arises from the value of being related to others in this way, and he shows how familiar moral ideas such as fairness and responsibility can be understood through their role in this process of mutual justification and criticism.

Scanlon bases his contractualism on a broader account of reasons, value, and individual well-being that challenges standard views about these crucial notions. He argues that desires do not provide us with reasons, that states of affairs are not the primary bearers of value, and that well-being is not as important for rational decision-making as it is commonly held to be. Scanlon is a pluralist about both moral and non-moral values. He argues that, taking this plurality of values into account, contractualism allows for most of the variability in moral requirements that relativists have claimed, while still accounting for the full force of our judgments of right and wrong.

From Library Journal
Scanlon offers a sharp challenge to much contemporary moral philosophy. Most philosophers think that agreements between people play only a subsidiary role in moral theory. What is right or wrong is independent of what people accept. Agreements rest on morality; they do not underlie it. Scanlon dissents. In his conception, morality depends on principles it would not be reasonable for people to reject. These agreements do not derive from further moral facts. Scanlon also challenges the view that desires give reasons for action, leveling heavy artillery at the contrary position of Bernard Williams. The originality, scope, and careful argument of this work mark it as an indispensable book.?David Gordon, Bowling Green State Univ., OH

Review
[Scanlon's] discussions are deep and honest, and they illuminate many key concepts of moral philosophy: well being, trust, friendship, loyalty, promises. It would be--and will be--the business of more than one doctoral thesis to assess his success. (Simon Blackburn New York Times Book Review)

T. M. Scanlon is a scrupulous, astringent, relentlessly exact writer, without any of the fuss and flutter that come from the desire to please. His book is pure philosophy, unadulterated. (Stuart Hampshire New York Review of Books)

Thomas Scanlon's understanding of [morality's] complexity and of its sources in the variety of human relations and values is one of the virtues of this illuminating book. To say that it is long awaited would be an understatement. Scanlon has been one of the most influential contributors to moral and political philosophy for years...The appearance of his first book, a complex and powerful argument for the moral theory first sketched in his essay Contractualism and Utilitarianism, is a philosophical event. (Thomas Nagel London Review of Books)

I rejoice in the appearance of this magnificent book. It is not often that a work on ethics opens up a novel, arresting position on matters that have been debated for thousands of years. And What We Owe To Each Other does precisely that. (Philip Pettit Times Literary Supplement)

Mr. Scanlon has produced a compelling explanation of the moral thinking behind such duties as truth-telling and promise-keeping, and for this he deserves great praise. (Douglas A. Sylva Washington Times)

What do we owe to each other? What obligations of honesty, respect, trust and consideration exist between people? That is the deep and ancient question Harvard philosopher T. M. Scanlon attempts to illuminate in this closely argued book. Its success as an argument illustrates why moral philosophy should matter...Scanlon is a careful and precise thinker, a leading figure in contemporary philosophy, and here he is working at the height of his considerable powers. (Mark Kingwell Globe and Mail)

Scanlon presents the most complete statement to date of his version of 'contractualism'...He treats as basic the notion that we have reason to want to live with others and are motivated to seek agreement on a set of principles for the general regulation of behavior that others similarly motivated could not reasonably reject...He carefully addresses many concerns that have been raised about his and similar versions of contractualism; anyone discussing contractualism will have to consider his account. (D. R. C. Reed Choice)

Attractive contractualism
By Arnaeus
A stunning text - beautifully written and argued; very difficult to poke holes in it (which is not surprising given the big name philosopher friends who commented on drafts). I am most attracted to the chapter on values: it is a brave attempt to put consequentialists on a leash. Does Scanlon succeed? Some consequentialists - namely, the Australian philosopher Philip Pettit- would say no, not because Scanlon's account of the complexity of values is false, but because he overestimates what consequentialists must be committed to. Nonetheless, Scanlon's non-consequentialist axiology remains an attractive alternative to other deontological theories (eg. Kamm). All of this aside, Scanlon's book is an excellent example of sound analytical philosophy delivered with style. It is worth reading just to get a taste of the best in this kind of philosophising.

Excellent, careful, except in crucial places. Buy it, still.
By James Ryan
Fabulous philosophizing, five stars, were it not for the obvious alternative theory that when we say "I have no desire to take bitter medicine", we mean "no desire that I can palpably feel at the forefront of consciousness, even though I remember that I have a very strong desire to take the medicine because I strongly desire to get well"; and that when we say "the mere fact that I have a desire to get a new computer is no reason to get one (since I don't need a new one, old one's fine, etc.)", we mean "no reason to speak of" since that desire, although a reason, is vastly outweighed by my other desires. (E.g. we say that there's "no chance" the team will win - we mean "none worth mentioning", not literally "none"). With these and similarly disappointing arguments, Scanlon concludes that desires have only a negligible role in practical reasoning. But clearly practical reasoning is a matter of determining what the most coherent set of one's strongest desires decrees. Scanlon doesn't even mention that alternative theory. Also, the contract theory he offers is supposed to take fairness into account when deciding what counts as a reasonable contract and to do this without circularity. Scanlon says he'll get out of the circle (what is right in terms of what is a reasonable contract, what is a reasonable contract in terms of what is right), but he never gets out. So smart, so close, and yet so far, from 5 stars. Still, it's head and shoulders above most books in moral theory this decade, (so careful and painstaking in many places).

Rawlsianism extended
By Jeffrey Rubard
*A Theory of Justice*, the massive work published by John Rawls in the 1970s, will be front-and-center in future discussions of 20th century philosophy: coming after decades of people trying to rehabilitate utilitarianism, Rawls attempted to clarify the basic shared principles of political liberalism from a "deontological" standpoint -- rights, not goods, and the social contract, not contract per se. Love him or hate him, Rawls was unquestionably a force to be reckoned with. But his own reckoning went little further than the virtue of justice: though early essays by him tried out a deontological approach to ethics in general, Rawls balked at assembling an elegantly designed system and stuck with the major business of politics. T.M. Scanlon, Rawls' colleague at Harvard and sometime student, has over the past twenty years put a general ethics with Rawlsian contours on the philosophical agenda: in this book, he succeeds quite admirably in adumbrating a theory of moral obligation that those who know the "veil of ignorance" will find familiar.

Scanlon's basic insight is that moral claims, considered from a deontological standpoint, require the proffering of convincing and cogent reasons for acting in a certain way: if we wish to treat another person morally, we must be prepared to offer reasons for our acting thus-and-so that they could not reasonably reject. In this way, the contractarian approach to moral reasoning acquires a larger purchase without losing its resonance with liberal social institutions and ways of living: Scanlon recognizes that human goods are plural and subject to debate, and he certainly does not require that all agents must march in lock step for morality to obtain. In this he avoids the Baroque excesses of Kant's universalism, which puts every lie beyond the pale and has been approvingly referred to by totalitarian monsters otherwise seemingly allergic to ethical inquiry. The systematics of Scanlon's theory are tight: however, this book is of course only a beginning essay in how we can realistically assess moral obligation in an era where many are convinced God is dead and others want to put them on trial for attempted murder.

Accessible to anyone with a basic philosophical education; recommended for fans of Rawls and a certain stringency of moral principle.

Great anatomy reference book
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo28JKJ6YT1A1VO]]This book is by the same authors Andras Szunyoghy and Gyrgy Feher, who also wrote another very similar book called Human Anatomy for Artists, which I also have. This book is thicker at 604 pages and focuses about 200 pages on human anatomy.

If you already have Human Anatomy for Artists and not interested in the drawings of animal bones and muscles, you can skip this book. Most of the illustrations inside have actually appeared in the other book. The only additional part I see is some additional drawings of drapery. The main difference is the other focuses on every single muscle with many different views, this book also has those muscles but in lesser but the basic view -- front and back. Bones still have as many views and come with muscle attachment points.

Illustrations of bones and muscles are very big and clear. The animals featured are horse, dog, cat, pig, monkey, sheep, bear, deer, cow, camel and lion. A big bulk is on horses. It's really interesting to see how different the bone and muscle structures are in different animals. I don't have any other animal anatomy books to compare from but this one's pretty good.

This is a very useful anatomy reference book.

exelent reference book
By Flory Patricia Blanco Murillo
If you want to study human anatomy it`s not really enough, but if you have other human anatomy books its a great way to study animals. I would have liked it to have more detail in other tipes of animals, like birds or reptiles, but the amount of information in horses and dogs are ok for me. The explanations are pretty much like the other Szunyoghy`s book with a lot of details in the individual parts, bones, etc.
Because of the amount of diferent animal it has I would rate it as the best animal anatomy book I have.

Excellent book for artists
By J. Monteiro
This book is a must have for artists of every sort. It's got a different approach on anatomy, as the pictures are drawn by hand and easy to interpret. It has a few flaws in the proportions, but the goal, I guess, is understanding the inner workings of the bodies, layer by layer. It features human and animal anatomy, from cats to bears, but has a more extensive take on horses and people.

How to write and maintain large Fortran code
By W Boudville
Fortran is still widely used in science and engineering, though if you look at new computer books, you can scarcely tell this. Since those usually discuss languages like C, C++ and Java. But when it comes to raw number crunching, and where a GUI might be nice, but is strictly secondary, there is a ton of legacy code in Fortran.
So there is still a need for a book like this, which discusses how to use the latest version, Fortran 95. What the author strives for is to cover something lacking in many older Fortran texts. Those tend to explain the syntax and how to write small programs, of a few thousand lines or less.
But there is often little discussion on how to manage the complexity of libraries stretching to 10^5 lines or 10^6 lines of code. How can you maintain and understand and add to these bodies? Issues like unit testing, which quite often discussed in java or C++, are well described here. Design discipline is also emphasised.
So if you are still writing in Fortran, and are wondering about coping with growing code, consider this book.

A Very Comprehensive Introduction
By H. Chibli
Precise and consice. Apparently the author knows how to communicate with his audience. The book is very easy to read, and by the time you have finished reading and implementing the examples you will definitely know how to do some basic coding with Fortran 95. Great buy!
