Good but predictable
By R.M.J.
A decent story but a tad too "fan fiction-like" than I had expected. The case itself was decent as far as mysteries go, but I daresay that the villain was predictable.
SPOILERS!

The writing style and the overabundant attempts to make Winnie into an undesirable person to the reader made her a suspect from the start. While designed to move the story along within a given setting, the mystery could have done with more complexity that prevented Holmes from discovering Winnie. There are things that a true Sherlock Holmes would not have missed and would have linked together right away; I know I did. Feelings for Watson aside, I doubt it would have taken him the length of the book to puzzle it out.

The romance itself was touching, although a bit overbearing at times. I understand that it was the focus of the novel, but we are reminded of it almost on a continuous basis. The angst at the beginning of the novel, the war Watson has with himself would have done better if it had continued throughout the story. Have him second guess himself, try to break it off because of impropriety and scandals, or maybe he was still in denial about his feelings.

The ending folded everything up into a neat little package and though it gives the warm and happy ending most readers crave, the climax could have done with more hiccups that Holmes would have had to work out. Details into the government secrets and issues behind the scenes would have been interesting. A larger array of cast would have also made the reader confused as to who was responsible. With the small main cast, only four excluding Holmes and Watson, it was easy once the facts become apparent.

Overall good, but could use more work. Perhaps a rewrite or a sequel with more complexity and conflict

An Excellent Mystery AND A Love Story
By AcerAcer
I think everything about this book has been covered in the existing reviews, but I'm putting in my two cents anyway because the story is that good.

This book would be excellent if it were only a mystery. The addition of the love story between Holmes and Watson just makes it that much more interesting. Yes, there were a few problems. Some of the villainy is way overdone. Also, it's hard to believe that Watson didn't get killed what with all the attempts on his life. And Watson is thoughtlessly (and misleadingly) flirty with one particular woman in the story, considering both the times and his newly-declared passion for Holmes. So there were definitely issues.

To the story: Holmes calls Watson to a country estate to be best man at his upcoming wedding. Watson is surprised, to say the least, because two weeks earlier (the last time both men had been at Baker Street at the same time) Holmes hadn't even been engaged. Watson is even more surprised when Holmes confesses he's never kissed a woman before and asks Watson to give him lessons, leading both of them to confess their long-hidden feelings for each other. Happily, Holmes has only gotten himself engaged for a case (although he does tease Watson along for a bit, pretending that it's the real thing) so there's next to no will-he-or-won't-he angst about the wedding and we, along with Watson, can settle down and concentrate on the mystery with no distractions out of a soap opera.

As to the mystery, Holmes is on the trail of a spy. Certain clues have led him to the estate owned by the father of Winnifred, the young woman to whom Holmes ends up engaged. Holmes suspects Winnie's half-brother, but gets no further along with the case until Watson arrives. Which is about the time all hell breaks loose.

I don't think it is too hard to figure out who the villain is, but the authors do a pretty good job of keeping the story going well past the point where Holmes probably should have realized it himself.

As far as the sex scenes are concerned, they are early in the book and there aren't that many of them, because the injuries from the attacks on Watson's life preclude any sexual activity starting the day after his arrival. Personally, I found them to be quite tasteful. I assure you that few people would find them overdone if they were about heterosexual activity. I certainly take issue with reviews that claim the book is mostly porn.

I don't know if the authors intend to write any more stories along these lines but if they do, I look forward to reading them.

A wonderful tale of forbidden love between Holmes and Watson!
By Kindle Customer
I love this book and have been eagerly awaiting a follow-up to this wonderfully written story! The romance between Holmes and Watson is very believable, very sweet and not too explicit. The authors tell a very good mystery story even as the two men are dealing with the new stage of their friendship..from friends to lovers. I enjoyed this book so much that I have re-read it at least 3 times. I hope T.D. McKinney and Terry Willis will give me a new story about the further romance between these beloved characters!
